Many things make me happy.

ِ ‫فَـآكُلُها‬
،‫ساخ َن ًة‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬
My mom makes an olive oil and zaatar sandwich.
I eat it hot and I feel happy.
 ،‫شبُ ُه َم ًعا‬
َ ْ َ‫ن‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬ ،‫اي بِالْ َم ْري َـ ِم َّي ِة‬
ُ ّ‫الش‬
My father boils tea with melamine. ،‫يَ ْغلي ِه أَيب‬
I drink it with him
and I become happy.
 ،‫أَ ْجلِ ُس َم َع َج َّديت‬
ِ ْ‫نُ َنق ُِّش كَ ْع َك ال‬
‫عيد‬
،‫ِبأَشْ كا ٍل َجميلَ ٍة‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬
I sit with my grandmother.
We bake Eid cakes.
We make many designs
and it makes me happy.
‫يَ ْح ِملُني َج ِّدي َعىل كَ ِت َف ْي ِه‬
،َ‫لِ َنق ِْط َف ال َّزيْتون‬
،‫أ ُه ُّز الشجر َة ِب ُق َّو ٍة‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬
My grandfather carries me on his shoulders
while picking olives.
I shake the tree hard
and find I am happy.
،‫َوآكُلُها بِشَ ِه َّي ٍة‬ ِ ‫أَ ْص َن ُع كُر‬
،‫ات الْ َم ْن َس ِف‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬ ، ٍ‫أُكَ ِّو ُرها ِب ِإتْقان‬
I make sweets, I eat them with pleasure
rolling them into balls carefully. and I am happy.
 ،‫أَ ْدبُ ُك َم َع ُه ْم‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬
I gather with the children
of the neighborhand.
We hold hands.
،‫أَ ْجتَ ِم ُع َم َع أَ ْوال ِد الْ َح ِّي‬
،‫نَشْ ب ُِك أَيْدينا‬
I dance with them
and I am happy.
 ِ ْ‫يُ ْعطيني َع ّمي ال‬
،‫عيديَّ َة‬
،‫أَبْتَ ِه ُج كَثيـ ًرا‬
،‫أُ َخ ِّبئُها‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬
My uncle gives me a gift for Eid.
I smile a lot and hide it.
It makes me happy.
 ،ِ‫أَلِ ُّف َرأْيس بِشا ِل َع َّمتي الْ ُمطَ َّرز‬
،‫َوأَ ْس ِدلُ ُه َعىل كَ ِتف ََّي‬
،‫أَ ْض َح ُك ِم ْن قَلْبي‬
.‫َوأَكو ُن َسعي ًدا‬
I wrap my head with my aunt's embroidered shawl
and I let it drape on my shoulder.
I laugh from my heart
and I become happy.

‫‪But I am most happy when...‬‬

‫ِع ْن َدما‪..‬‬

I share my happiness with others.

 When I Am Happy
What makes you happy? One young boy shows us the things that make him happy; from his
mother’s hot thyme mankousha to his grandfather’s olive field. Come along and share his happiness!

About the Author:
Hiyam Abu Adas has worked in the field of children's literature since 1992,
participating in many local, regional, and international book fairs. She
has consulted on book acquisition for many private and public educational
institutions. She is the author of two stories in the Room to Read Jordan
Accelerator Program: Books for Our Kids: Twenty Storybooks in Jordan.

About the Illustrator:

Haya Halaw is a freelance children's book illustrator. She exhibited her work
for the first time in the fifth edition of Al Sharjah's Exhibition for children's
books illustrations. Haya has worked with local and Arabic publishing houses.
