Linear Variable Differential Transformer

INSTRUCTION MANUAL
FOREWORD LS Series

For Use in Safety.....

Thank you for your using our LS Series Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT).
SHINKAWA Sensor Technology applies strict quality control and inspections to ensure the high reliability of
its products.
To assure efficient use, please carefully read both this instruction manual and those of any related equipment
you may be using in combination with the LVDT.

! CAUTION
1. Megger (insulation) test of signal cable
When testing the insulation of the signal cable, be sure to disconnect the cable from the
LVDT and monitor.
After the test, discharge the charged electric load before connecting the cable to the LVDT
and monitor.
2. Extension rod with core
1) Handling of extension rod with core
Insert the extension rod with core straight into the LVDT. The unit will be damaged if the
extension rod is inserted diagonally or subjected to lateral pressure.
2) Insertion direction of extension rod with core
Be sure to insert the extension rod with core from the lead wire side of the LVDT.
If inserted from the opposite side, the unit cannot produce the specified accuracy.
3) Installation of extension rod with core
When the LVDT is used for measuring the valve opening, etc., it is usually not sufficient
to fix the extension rod with setscrews, because these could loosen due to the vibrations
acting on the mount. We, therefore, recommend that you fix the extension rod by welding
or the like.
4) Replacement of extension rod with core
Use the LVDT in combination with a core and extension rod having the same Serial No.
for reasons such as breakage may influence the accuracy or characteristics of the unit.
Therefore, be sure to conduct characteristic check prior to use.
3. Cable outlet of terminal box
The terminal box of the terminal board type LVDT is provided with a ø22 hole for leading out
the cable. When shipped the cable outlet points into the direction opposite to the core
insertion port. It can be changed by 90° from each position to face into any of the other 3
directions (refer to pages 6 and 7) . For this reason, the cable outlet should be located at the
bottom, if at all possible.

i
FOREWORD LS Series

4. Don’t step on
Never use the LVDT as a step, since this will damage the unit.
The top cover of the terminal board type bearing a below warning sign is square and fixed
with screws at its four corners to the terminal box. Therefore, its position should be changed
as desired in steps of 90 to easily visible location with respect to the installation position of
the LVDT.

取扱注意:NOTICE

足掛禁止:NO STEP

5. Environmental limits
Use the LVDT within the specified environmental limits.
If operating temperature condition exceed the maximum guaranteed limit, the irreversible
damage will result.
6. Do not measure insulation resistance and dielectric strength other than those at places
specified.
If measured, transducer damage may result.
7. Do not remodel unit without permission. Otherwise the guarantee can not be made.
8. This unit is designed for use by specialists or persons thoroughly familiar with the field.
9. Make sure that the end user receives this Instruction Manual delivered with the unit.

Before Use.....

When the unit is received, inspect it for damage suffered in transport and check whether it is the item you
ordered. In the unlikely event that it was damaged in transport or does not function according to specifications,
please contact the SHINKAWA Office or dealer nearest you.
Store the unit under the ambient conditions given in the specification.
Avoid places where it is exposed to high humidity or corrosive gases.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION LS Series

1.1 GENERAL
The LS Series Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT) are 3wire type LVDTs which, due to their
highly reliable design, are ideal for measuring the valve opening and thermal case growth on turbines.
• 9 types of strokes from 50 to 450 mm
• Superior vibration resistance
• High linearity of ±0.2%

1.2 OPERATING PRINCIPLE

As shown in Fig. 1, the LS Series LVDTs are 3wire type LVDTs. The two identically wound coils, A-B and
B-C as Fig. 1 are contained in the casing. When the extension rod is operated, the core moves in the coils
across A-B-C as shown Fig. 2 (a), (b) and (c). According to Fig.2 (a), when a constant voltage and constant
frequency signal (VEX) is supplied across coil A-C, the relationship between impedance ZAB across coil A-B
and impedance ZBC across coil B-C becomes ZAB < ZBC, and the relationship between voltage VAB across
coil A-B and voltage VBC across coil B-C becomes VAB < VBC. Similar to above, VAB=VBC in Fig. 2 (b)
and VAB > VBC in Fig.2 (c).
ZAB and ZBC vary in proportion to the displacement of the core. Therefore, a voltage proportional to the
displacement as shown in Fig.2 (d) can be obtained by detecting the difference between VAB and VBC.
They are not rectified before this differential calculation, phase detection is required because the phase is
inverted around the null position and the voltage value becomes symmetrical.

3. INSTALLATION LS Series

3.1 PROCEDURE
It is recommended that you use the LS Series Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) in
combination with the VM-11P/VM-5E, VM-11P/VM-5A or in the configuration shown in Fig.3.
A connection example for combination with the VM-11P/VM-5E, VM-5A is shown on page 8. If you use
LVDT in combination with the VM-11P/VM-5E, VM-11P/VM-5A, please also carefully read the instruction
manual of the VM-11P/VM-5E, VM-11P/VM-5A.
The null position which lies in the center (50% point) of the measuring range is marked substitutively in white
on the extension rod.
When aligned it with the end of the case, this mark can be used as a rough standard for the null position. The
exact electric null position is the point where the output voltage in the circuit shown in Fig.3 is 0V.
Changing the cable length slightly affects sensitivity. In case of a 0.75mm2 3-core shielded cable, for instance,
the sensitivity decreases by approx. 0.03% for every additional meter of cable length.
When the cable length exceeds 300m, linearity will begin to get worse.. Therefore please keep the cable
length below 300m.

3.2 CHANGING THE DIRECTION OF THE TERMINAL BOX CABLE OUTLET

The terminal box of the terminal board type LVDT is provided with a φ22 hole for leading out the cable.
When shipped the cable outlet points into the direction opposite to the core insertion port as shown in Fig.5.
However it can be changed by 90° to face into any of the other 3 directions by following the procedures. Also
refer to Fig.6.

1) Loosen the top cover setscrew ( 1 ), and take off the top cover ( 2 ).
2) Loosen the terminal box setscrew ( 5 ) inside the terminal box, and take the terminal box ( 4 ) off the
terminal board mounting base ( 9 ).
3) Both the terminal box ( 4 ) and the terminal board mounting base ( 9 ) are 72×72mm square, so that the
cable outlet (10) can be pointed into the desired direction by turning it in steps of 90°. After having made
the adjustment, fix the terminal box ( 4 ) with the terminal box setscrews ( 5 ) on the terminal board
mounting base ( 9 ).
4) Install the top cover ( 2 ) with the top cover setscrews ( 1 ) on top of the terminal box ( 4 ).
