Great job Alpha Zeta! the upcoming year.
Greetings Sisters!
It’s nearing the end of summer and time for another school year to begin. All the best to those teachers
returning to their classrooms and also to our retired teachers in whatever activities they might be pursing
this fall. My hope is that you’ve had a restful and relaxing summer. It does seem that the fastest time of
year is June to August don’t you agree?

As I begin my biennium as President I would like to thank the Executive Committee and Joyce Roof for
their support and encouragement this summer and also to the Alpha Zeta membership as we work
together to hold true to the Seven Purposes of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society. The
opportunity and challenge to serve as President of Alpha Zeta will be one that I will hold in the highest
regard. I would like to ask each of you to accept new challenges also for this next biennium also.
Together we can make a difference as we promote professional and personal growth of women educators
and excellence in education in our communities and school districts.

A change that will be occurring this year and one that has been suggested by several members is to move
the December meeting to the month of November. We will incorporate this change this year and see if
the weather cooperates better for us and if the attendance is higher at the November meeting. We will
still be doing a basket raffle and will include the basket raffle at the November 6th meeting. I can hardly
wait to see the wonderful creations our members produce!

please go to the following link http://www.heartofateachermovie.com on your computer to view a short
movie called “The Heart of a Teacher” and what a great reminder of why we teach. I look forward to
meeting with you on September 23rd at the Towanda American Legion.

NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS

Cindy and Phil Devonshire are enjoying being home after the cool winter in the south! We had great
travels and met a lot of wonderful people. We will be staying home this winter because we are planning
an extensive trip cross country to Alaska and back next spring and summer. Hope this finds everyone
doing well.

Gail Steiner wrote that after completing another year in first grade at Sheshequin-Ulster Elementary
in Athens School District, I headed for Edisto Island, SC.  Edisto is a great place to get away from it all,
as it has no motels, no fast food, but DOES have a new and used book store!  After one week of hot,
beautiful beach weather, I picked up my husband in Charleston, SC and we enjoyed a second week in
Edisto together.  Then, the fun began.  We picked up our daughter and granddaughter in North Wales,
PA on our way home, and came to Sayre to get ready for our garage sale. This was in preparation for
our move into our new home in Johnstown, Pa. where my husband has been working while I remained
to complete the school year and sell our house.
Needless to say, I will not be joining my Alpha Zeta Sisters for anymore meetings.  Hopefully, when I'm
settled I will look for the local chapter in Johnstown.  I'm planning on substituting and hopefully finding
another teaching position in that area.  Why not?  I'll need a way to keep up with the latest reading
materials and support my book and dish habit! My new address will be Gail Steiner 108 Deerfield Lane,
Johnstown, Pa. 15905.

From Joan Roy: So far in 2010 I traveled to Southeast Asia to visit Singapore, Malaysia,Thailand, Viet
Nam and Hong Kong. I then spent 1 1/2 months in Florida. With spring came all the activity of the gas
wells. This phenomenon is going to affect nearly everyone in Alpha Zeta Chapter over the coming
months and years. The DKG Art and Craft Retreat in April was great fun. Several of us went to
Spokane, WA in July.

Joanne and Burton Adams went to their Daughter Amber's graduation from Basic Training at
Lackland Air Force base in San  Antonio, Texas. She was a distinguished graduate and is now Airman
First Class. They spent several days there and visited the sighs of San Antonio.

Megan and Andrew Bohensky welcomed Elise Mary Bohensky into the world on May 7, 2010. She
weighed 8 lbs. 13 oz. and was 21 inches long.

Pat Stadelmaier's News: My husband, Ron, and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in June
by taking a trip from Seattle to SanFrancisco.  We flew to Seattle and joined Collette Tours traveling by
bus down the coast.  The weather and scenery were beautiful! In July, I started bridge lessons in Athens
on Tuesday mornings.  I'm trying to get more people involved in the "Wonderful World of Bridge".  If
you've been wanting to learn the game give me a call - 607-732-0601 or send me an email to
pstad145@aol.com.

Sandra Hollenback says summer seems to be going quickly by and one of the special things for me
was the pleasure of having my picture taken with George W.  No, not George Bush, but George
Washington.  I was at Mount Vernon on the 4th of July.  Later went to hear the Boston Children's Choir
at Kennedy Center and finally took in the fireworks from the roof of the building on Penna. Avenue
where  my brother-in-law works.  It was a full day!  See you in September!

Soni Haflett has spent the summer taking an online course offered through Wilkes University.  The
course, Teachers Changing the World, is full of rich material and learning content that can help
educators learn the process of on-line learning.  The 21st century tools that are available to help our
students are explored and explained.  DKG member Chris Davis was a co-facilitator of this Wilkes
University graduate course.
ALPS Program has a busy summer: ALPS-Adventure Learning and Programming for Success, a
teambuilding program run by DKG members, Betsi Seeley and Soni Haflett has been very active this
summer sharing their philosophy of team-building and it’s importance.   The summer began with them
and two other colleagues , Mary Abreu and Amy Vargason of ALPS teaching a graduate course for
Wilkes University- ALPS-The Classroom Connection.  In-service educators from various school districts
attended this course and received 3 graduate credits from the university upon completion.

ALPS also ran sessions for the Susquehanna Intermediate Unit for the Migrant Education program at
Alparon Park at Camp Adventure for a week in July.  Students from Pre-k to 8th grade were involved in
team- building activities and problem solving situations.

ALPS presented a workshop for the Reading Clinic at Mansfield University to the elementary students
enrolled in their summer program.

We are continuing our quest to complete our resource book.  This has been a work in progress and the
facilitators of this program know that when it is completed, there will be many educators that will benefit
from the sharing of successful ideas and implementation of team-building and experiential education.

Linda Nickerson attended her first International Convention in Spokane, Wa. July 19-26, 2010. She
traveled to Spokane with Pi sisters Kay Stuart and Grace Schauer. Alpha Zeta sisters Joyce Roof,
Carol Lane and Joan Roy made the trip to Spokane earlier and met the ladies at Washington Night on
the River. Attending the Keynote sessions and taking part in the Constitution By-laws revision was truly
an experience. All of us had a wonderful trip and memorable rides via Delta Airlines......stayed tuned for
more details at our September meeting!! :-)

Joyce Roof has enjoyed a busy, fun filled summer with day trips to see Promises, Promises at the Merry
Go Round Theatre in Auburn, NY, Joseph in Lancaster, Pa. She attended the International Convention
in Spokane and upon returning from Spokane left within the week for a visit to Branson, Mo. She also
attended the Penn State Arts Festival and the Mt. Gretna Festival.

Taking Care of Ourselves
Regardless of your age, your responsibilities or your health issues, it is important that you take time for
yourself and nurture yourself properly. “The soul has an absolute, unforgiving need for regular
excursions into enchantment. It requires them like the body food and the mind needs thought.”—
Thomas Moore

The following are some suggestions that might work for you to affirm that you count. Share them with
others. Women need to take better care of ourselves:

• Allow yourself some private time each day.

• Take a long walk.

• Buy yourself some flowers.

• If you don’t have close friends, begin to develop an intimate circle of friends—This is one of the DKG
purposes.

• Put on your favorite music, turn it up loud and dance regardless of your age and/or physical condition
(Sing as if no one is listening; dance as if no one is watching).

• Allow yourself that special treat—anything from the manicure or pedicure to a good movie or book—
something just for you.

• Write a love letter (to your partner, your children, your parents, friends, yourself.)

Create a Buzz
When there is a “buzz,” be ready to share it with other people. Have your elevator speech ready. It
happened in Spokane when many asked about DKG. Spokanites soon found out as 1400+ descended on
the Convention Center July 20-24. Summer is a good time to meet people, tell them where you have
been and tell them about Delta Kappa Gamma. When we are enthused, we get others enthused - it is
contagious!
