1. Design a slab base for a column ISHB 300 @ 58.

8 Kg/m subjected to an axial load of 1500


kN. Use M20 Concrete for the pedestal

Bearing strength of concrete = 0.45 f ck = 0.45 x 20 = 9 N/mm2

(bearing stress is 0.6 times but a lower value is used)

Area of Plate required A = = = 1.66 x 103 mm2

Let us assume a plate as below.

For a=b we have,

Area = (300+2a)(250+2a) = 0.167x106.

That is 4a2 + 1100a-166925x103 = 0.

On solving a = 67 mm.

Therefore L = 300+2a = 300 + 2(67) = 434 mm = 450 mm say.

And B = 250 + 2a = 400 mm say.

Therefore the total area of the plate = 450x400.>1.66 x 103mm2

We have,

Provide a 20 mm thick plate.

• Connect the base plate to foundation using 4 nos. 20 mm dia 300 mm long anchor bolts.
• Column is connected to the base plate, using 2ISA 80x80x6 mm cleat angles with 20 mm
bolts.
