Design of Sump Well Walls:

Assuming walls are hinged with base slab and top slab

Unit weight of soil (𝛄S)= 18 kN/m3

Unit weight of water (𝛄w)= 10 kN/m3

Dimensions: H or a (Height) = 5.35 m, Assume Thickness (D) = 230 mm,

L (Length) = B (Breadth) = 2.2 m + 0.23m + 0.23 m = 2.66 m

Design of Top Slab of Sump Well:

Dimensions: Leff = Beff = 2.20 + 0.23 = 2.43 m

deff = Leff / (20*M.F.) = 2430/(20*1.2) mm = 101.5 mm [∴ IS 456 Cl 23.2.1]

Assume thickness D = 150 mm [∴ We are providing RCC cover of 150 mm

Live load = 2 kN/m2 [∴ Pumps and other machinery to be established on top slab]

Dead Load of Slab = (25 kN/m3)*(0. 15 m) = 3.75 kN/m2

Total Load (w) = 5.75 kN/m2

Ly/Lx = 1 < 2 ∴ Two Way slab

Maximum Positive Moment = 0.056 * 5.75 kN/m2 * (2.43 m)2 = 1.90 kN-m

deff, req = √M/Qb = 33.94 mm, say 40 mm

Clear cover on outer face = 30 mm

Spacing of 8 mm Ф bars required for minimum steel = 139.56 mm

Provide 8 mm Ф bars @ 125 mm c/c (Bottom - Main bars - Bothways)

Load of walls = (25 kN/m3)*(9.72m)*(0.23m)*(5.35m) = 299.01 kN

Load of Top Slab = (25 kN/m3)*(0.15m)*(2.66m*2.66m) = 26.54 kN

Dead Load of Foundation = (25 kN/m3)*(0.2m)*(3.66m*3.66m) = 66.98 kN

Total Load (w) = 552.25 kN

Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil = 50 kN/m2

Area of Foundation Required = 552.25/50 m2 = 11.05 m2

Proposed Raft Foundation Dimension = 3.66 m x 3.66 m

Proposed Area of Foundation = 3.66 m*3.66 m = 13.40 m2

moment distribution method.

Net bending moment (M’) = M - Tx

Where, x = d - D/2 = 172 - 230/2 = 57 mm

M’ = 24.0167 - (49.83*0.057) = 21.18 kN-m

Ast1 = M’/σstjd = 943.60 mm2

Ast2 = T/σst = 332.2 mm2

Ast = Ast1 + Ast2 = 1,275.8 mm2

Spacing of 16 mm Ф bars required = 157.55 mm

Provide 16 mm Ф bars @ 150 mm c/c (At Corners) - No need as we are already

providing (12 mm @ 200 mm at corners which is overlapping 3 times giving Ast = 3*565
mm2 = 1695 mm2, Which is sufficient for corner moment)

Design of Base slab of Phytorid Bed:

Load of Stored Water + Filter Media upto 2.5m = (14.5kN/m3)*(2.5m)*(36.32m)*(6.51m)

= 8571.07 kN

Walls Load = (25kN/m3)*[8*(2.2*3.255*0.15) + 6*(2.2*3.255*0.23) + (36.01*2.83*0.23) +

3*(6.74*2.83*0.23) + 2*(37.7*2.83*0.23)] = 2,603.83 kN

Dead Load of Foundation = (25 kN/m3)*(0.25 m)*(38.3 m)*(7.8 m) = 1,867.13 kN

Total Load (w) = 13042.03 kN

Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil = 50 kN/m2

Area of Foundation Required = 13042.03 kN/50 m2 = 260.84 m2

Proposed Size of Foundation = 38.3 m X 7.8 m = 298.74 m2

∴ Extending 0.3 m from the outer side of wall

Soil Pressure (q) = (13042.03 kN)/(298.74 m2) = 43.65 kN/m2

Considering 1 m width of raft slab

Bending Moment = (43.65 kN/m2)*(0.3 m)2/2 = 1.97 kN-m

Deff, req = √M/Qb = 34.55 mm, say 40 mm

Clear cover on inner face = 50 mm, Clear cover on outer face = 50 mm

Dreq = 40+50+16/2 = 98 mm

Provide D = 200 mm, Clear Cover = 50 mm, Dia of Bar = 16 mm

[∴ As per cl. 4.8 IS 1080 the minimum thickness for base slab with no reinforcement is
150 mm. Since we are providing reinforcement and load is heavy beneath the walls
provide a base slab of 250 mm thickness]

deff = 200 - 50 - 16/2 = 142 mm

Ast = M/σstjd = 106.31 mm2

Minimum positive reinforcement required = 0.3*1000*200/100 = 600 mm2

Spacing of 16 mm Ф bars required for minimum reinforcement = 335 mm

Spacing of 12mm Ф bars required for minimum steel = 188.33 mm

Provide 12 mm Ф bars @ 150 mm c/c - (Bottom - Main bars - Bothways)

Distribution Steel Ast =
 0.24*1000*200/100 = 480 mm

Spacing of 12 mm Ф bars required = 235.42 mm

Provide 12 mm Ф bars @ 200 mm c/c - (Top - Distribution bars - Bothways)

Design of Hanging walls for Phytorid Bed - No load is coming on the wall hence
minimum reinforcement 0.12% is provided with 8 mm Ф bars @ 200mm c/c on one side
in both directions.
