Different Equipment for

Construction

I. Earth-Moving Heavy Equipment

a. Excavators
 Excavators are large construction
equipment that can be driven by tracks
or wheels, but tracks are more standard.
A conventional excavator has a long
bucket arm attached to a pivoting cab
that can rotate a full 360 degrees. The
operator sits in the cab and from there
has good visibility of the site. Excavators
are highly versatile and can be fitted with
special attachments for specialty jobs.
The most common uses for an excavator include:
Material handling
Excavating trenches, holes, and foundations
Brush cutting with hydraulic attachments
Demolition
Rough grading
Heavy lifting and pipe installation
Mining
River dredging

b. Backhoe Loaders
 Backhoe loaders, often
called backhoes, have a body that's
similar to a farm tractor and include an
adjustable shovel in front and a small
bucket in the back for digging. Backhoe
loaders are considered medium-sized
construction equipment for smaller jobs
and are capable of working in limited
space to perform various operations.
They can move
dirt, backfill excavations, dig holes and trenches, and place
pipes and other materials. One of the best attributes of
backhoe loaders is that they are wheel-driven and can be
used in urban areas. They can even be driven to a job site.
The bucket in the back can be changed to dig trenches of
different widths.

c. Bulldozers
 Bulldozers are considered one of the
strongest and most reliable heavy equipment
used in the construction industry. A
bulldozer is a powerful and extremely heavy
machine used to move dirt along large open
tracts of land. Bulldozers have a wide, flat
blade in front that can be operated using two
hydraulic pistons to move the blade in a
limited range of angles and depths. They are
normally used to push piles of earth and for
rough or fine grading, depending on the size of the
bulldozer. A bulldozer's considerable weight helps it crush
large boulders, among other operations.

d. Skid-Steer Loaders
 Skid-steer loaders are among the most
versatile machines available in the construction
industry. They are small and nimble and can
turn within their own footprint, just like a tank,
making them ideal for work in confined spaces
or in areas where construction activity has been
finalized. Skid-steer loaders are wheel-driven
and offer good traction in snow and mud. The
wheels also minimize soil compaction and
damage to finished areas. These handy loaders come in a
few different sizes and can be outfitted with a variety of
attachments to perform digging, drilling, compacting, log
grappling, snow blowing, jack-hammering, and other
tasks.

e. Motor Graders
 Motor graders are heavy
equipment used for fine grading and for
moving small amounts of dirt. They have
a long blade that can be adjusted to meet
certain angles to create a flat surface.
They can also be fitted with a second
blade in front of the front axle and in
some instances can be used for
underground mining. Motor graders are
typically used to fine-grade dirt or gravel
roads or to prepare the road base course before placing
asphalt. Graders can also be used to create sloped
surfaces or drainage ditches with shallow V-shaped cross-
sections.

f. Crawler Loaders
 A crawler loader is a cross between an
excavator and a backhoe or bucket loader.
Its tracks give it excellent stability, and its
versatile bucket makes it useful for moving
soil and debris and for loading material onto
trucks. Crawler loaders are also used for
excavation on relatively small projects. For
larger-scale work, a hydraulic excavator is
often used instead of a crawler loader.

g. Trenchers
 True to its name, a trencher is used to
dig trenches, usually narrow trenches for
piping and cabling. Trenchers come in many
different types and sizes, from small walk-
behind versions to very large trenching
machines that can cut into asphalt
pavement and other hard surfaces. The
trencher has a conveyor system that carries
the excavated material and deposits it onto
the ground next to the trench. Trenchers can use different
digging implements depending on the depth of the trench
and material being excavated.

h. Scrapers
 A scraper can move dirt and
aggregates quickly around a construction
site and is used primarily for digging and
leveling large areas of land. Scrapers are
large heavy equipment designed for open
areas, where they can run at high speeds
for cut and fill operations. Large self-
propelled scrapers are called motor
scrapers. There are also smaller scrapers, called pull
scrapers, which are pulled behind another vehicle.

i. Common Dump Trucks

 Dump trucks are needed on almost every
large job site. They offer limited function but
perform the all-important task of moving and
dumping many types of heavy material. They
are also road-ready so they can bring material
into or out of site and can travel anywhere
large equipment is permitted. Dump trucks
come in many different sizes for different
capacity and load needs, ranging from small
utility-type trucks with dumping beds to enormous
machines used in mining operations.

II. Foundation Equipment

a. Diesel Hammer
 The hammer is started by lifting the ram piston with
the load line until the trip mechanism automatically
releases the ram piston. The ram piston falls and
actuates the cam of the fuel pump that delivers a
measured amount of diesel fuel that falls into a cup
formed in the top of the anvil. Continuing its downfall,
the ram piston blocks the exhaust ports and begins
compression of air trapped between the ram piston and
the anvil. The compression of the trapped air creates a
preloading force on the anvil, the drive cap and the
pile. The gravity propelled ram piston strike the anvil,
delivering its impact energy to the pile.

b. Vibro Hammer
 A “vibratory hammer” is a tool used to
drive piles in or out of the ground for building
marine docks, bridges, buildings, roads, rail,
walls, and many other types of foundations.
Traditional pile drivers are very loud and use a
large weight to strike the pile. Vibratory
hammers, however, are very quiet and have
many advantages. A few advantages of
vibratory hammers are that they can drive
piles much more quickly, extract old piles out of the
ground, can be used underwater, are lightweight, protect
the environment (especially animal life), can be used in
close proximity to residential areas without noise
complaints, and are small and easy to ship.

c. Drilling Rig
 A drilling rig is a machine
that creates holes in the earths
subsurface. Drilling rigs can be
massive structures housing
equipment used to drill water wells,
oil wells, or natural gas extraction
wells, or they can be small enough to
be moved manually by one person
and such are called augers. Drilling
rigs can sample subsurface mineral deposits, test rock, soil
and groundwater physical properties, and also can be used
to install sub-surface fabrications, such as underground
utilities, instrumentation, tunnels or wells.

III. Hauling Equipment

a. Dump/Tipper Truck
 A dump truck, known also as a dumper
truck or tipper truck is used for transporting
loose material (such as sand, gravel, or
demolition waste) for construction. A typical
dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed,
which is hinged at the rear and equipped
with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the
material in the bed to be deposited ("dumped") on the
ground behind the truck at the site of delivery.

b. Transfer Dump Truck

 Transfer dump trucks for sale look like
simple dump trucks but with a separate trailer
that has a movable cargo container. The
container is loaded with gravel, sand, asphalt,
etc.
 HOURLY RATE: PHP 783.00

c. Water Truck/Tanker Truck

 A tanker truck has a cylindrical tank
which is used to carry water to construction
sites. The tank can be small or large; insulated
or non-insulated. It can be designed for single
or multiple loads based on internal divisions in
the tank. The capacity of a tanker truck can
range from 20,800 to 43,900 L.
 HOURLY RATE: PHP 2,450.00

d. Concrete Mixer Truck

 The concrete mixer is used to
create a cement mixture by adding
the aggregates such as sand or gravel
and water, etc. It has a revolving
drum in the rear for this purpose.
Without these trucks, it is difficult to
carry out construction work. So, make
a note of the above-mentioned trucks
that you may need before you begin with a new
construction project

IV. Pumping Equipment
a. Concrete Pump

 A concrete pump is a machine used for

transferring liquid concrete by pumping. There
are two types of concrete pumps.
The first type of concrete pump is
attached to a truck or longer units are on semi-
trailers. It is known as a boom concrete pump
because it uses a remote-
controlled articulating robotic arm (called
a boom) to place concrete accurately. Boom
pumps are used on most of the larger construction projects as they are
capable of pumping at very high volumes and because of the labour saving
nature of the placing boom. They are a revolutionary alternative to line-
concrete pumps.

The second main type of concrete pump is

either mounted on a truck or placed on a trailer,
and it is commonly referred to as a line pump or
trailer-mounted concrete pump. This pump
requires steel or flexible concrete
placing hoses to be manually attached to the
outlet of the machine. Those hoses are linked
together and lead to wherever the concrete
needs to be placed. Line pumps normally pump
concrete at lower volumes than boom pumps
and are used for smaller volume concrete placing applications such
as swimming pools, sidewalks, and single family home concrete
slabs and most ground slabs.

V. Power Generating Equipment

a. Commercial Generator
 A commercial generator can serve many
useful purposes at construction sites. It can
provide required power for various types of
construction equipment, lighting systems,
and pumps, as well as provide electricity for
the trailer designated to be used as a
temporary on-site office. Construction
generators are utilized for a variety of
industrial applications and are heavily relied
upon, often acting as the main source of power for projects
that may be located off the power grid.
 Having a reliable commercial generator on-site is not
only vital for day to day operations, but more importantly
for mission-critical applications. A durable, reliable source
of power can help reduce downtime, prevent endangering
your employees, and mitigate loss of profits due to power
outages.

VI. Shop Equipment

a. Welding Power Supply
 A welding power supply is a device that
provides an electric current to perform welding.
Welding usually requires high current (over 80
amperes) and it can need above 12,000
amperes in spot welding. Low current can also
be used; welding two razor blades together at 5
amps with gas tungsten arc welding is a good
example. A welding power supply can be as
simple as a car battery and as sophisticated as a
high-frequency inverter using IGBT technology,
with computer control to assist in the welding
process.
