CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 General Introduction

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing. A healthy life cycle
for a human being, a person needs to have a balanced diet and has to regularly exercise.
Taking care of your health is the important to not get sick and is the key live a long and
happy life.

Every person has rights to take care of their health, and in order for them to achieve this
even if they have financial problem or belongs to the lower-class governments provides
a public hospital for them.

A hospital is a health care institution that provides patient treatment with specialized
medical and nursing staff and medical equipment. There are different kinds of hospitals
each with their own specialization, the best-known type of hospital is the general hospital.
It has an emergency department to treat urgent health problems ranging from fire and
accident victims to a heart attack.

1.2 Background of the Study

The first healers within the tribal communities of ancient Philippines were the Babaylans.
Later, folk doctors emerged, and the training and deployment of true medical practitioners
can be seen in the progression of Philippine history. Today, medical personnel trained
based on Western medicine such as Filipino nurses, physicians. Physical therapist,
pharmacists, surgeons and others – coexists with the still thriving group of traditional
healers that do not have formal education in scientific medicine. These healers cater to
people living in rural areas such as provinces that is away from the city and has little
facilities.

According to research, San Lazaro Hospital could be the oldest hospital in the country
based on Pampango historian Zoilo Galang, the San Lazaro Hospital was established in
1578; Enfermia de Naga, 1583; and Hospital de San Juan de Dios 1596. The hospital
has a 500-bed capacity that provides free health care delivery service among the
depressed, underserved, underprivileged sectors of the society.

The Philippine General Hospital is the largest government hospital administered by the
University of the Philippines and is designated as the National University Hospital. It is
the biggest hospital in the country with a 1500-bed capacity, is also a mixed-use hospital,
with 1000 beds for indigent patients and 500 beds for private patients. The hospital is
generally known as the hospital for indigent patients because it offers some of the lowest
rates for patients.

1.2 Historical Background

Bacoor is a first class city in the province of Cavite. The name of the municipality
originated when it was founded as a town in 1671. When the Spanish troops first arrived,
they met some local inhabitants in the process of building a bamboo fence or bakod in
Filipino. The Spanish troops asked the men the name of the village but due to the
language barrier, the local inhabitants thought the Spaniards were asking what they were
building and thus answered “bakood”. The Spaniards pronounced it as “Bacoor”

In Cavite, there is only one Level 4 Hospital, namely the De La Salle University Medical
Center, Dasmariñas. A Level 4 hospital is a teaching hospital.

There are 10 Level 3 hospitals in Cavite:

 Metro South Medical Center, Bacoor

 St. Dominic Medical Center Inc., Bacoor
 Cavite Medical Center, Cavite City
 Bautista Hospital, Cavite City
 St. Paul Hospital Cavite Inc., Dasmarinas
 Emilio Aguinaldo College Medical Center, Dasmarinas
 Divine Grace Medical Center, Gen. Trias
 Our Lady of the Pillar Medical Center, Imus
 Medical Center Imus, Imus
 Tagaytay Hospital and Medical Center, Tagaytay City

1.5 Statement of the Problem

In the city of Bacoor there are a total of 9 hospitals: Bacoor District Hospital, Crisostomo
General Hospital, Molino Doctors Hospital, Prime Global Care Medical Center, Inc., St.
Dominic Medical Center, Inc., Metro South Medical Center, St. Michael Medical Hospital,
Southeast Asian Medical Center, & Bacoor Doctors Medical Center. Technically the
Bacoor District Hospital is not included because it is currently under construction. All of
these hospital are owned by a private sector.

The problem is that out of all the hospitals there is no public hospital that can
accommodate the less fortunate residents of Bacoor. This is a factor that contributes to
the deaths of people living in Bacoor, that they rather treat their sickness at home than to
consult to a professional with a medical expertise that they cannot afford because of
financial problems.

Moriones Festival of Marinduque

BEACH RESORT 12
In summary of this article, Moriones Festival is a folk-religious event held annually during
Holy Week on the island of Marinduque which is considered the geographical heart of the
Philippines.

The word “morion” refers to the visor of the helmet that is associated with the armor of
Roman Soldiers. The “Moriones” are men and women in costumes and masks replicating
the clothing of biblical Roman Soldiers as interpreted by local folk. This festival tradition
has inspired the creation of other festivals in the Philippines where cultural practices are
turned into street performances.

It is one of the oldest religious festivals in the Philippines. The Moriones Festival is a
dedication to the half-blind Roman Soldier, Longinus, who pierced Jesus in his side with
a lance while he was on the cross. Legend has it that when some of the blood of Jesus
fell into his eyes his sight returned. Upon experiencing this miracle, Longinus became
convinced that Jesus was truly the son of God and converted to Christianity. The festival
re-enacts the search for Longinus by centurions—adorned in colorful costumes—for this
crime, with one member of the local community playing Longinus who is captured and
recaptured several times over the course of the festival in a playful game of cat and
mouse.

How Green Is your Building?

(By Dylan Afuang, published August 19, 2018, Manila Bulletin Website)

If we want to live a life that will ultimately benefit the world’s fragile environment, then
every home, office — or any place where we spend most of our time — should be a ‘green
building.’

To summarize this article, it explains about three topics such as what is green building,
taking LEED and Going Berde. In his explanation about green building, he cited the
definition of the World Green Building Council describes these structures whose design,
construction, or operation “reduce or eliminate negative impacts, and can create positive
impacts, on our climate and natural environment”. In addition, while there are some
developers have been to quick to market their projects as a ‘green’, he wrote that we
shouldn’t believe it as there are requirements that have to be complied with before a
building is truly green. This is true since many people are in to saving the environment,
unlike before.

In his second topic, Taking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design). LEED,
is a worldwide, third-party green program that certifies green buildings. He wrote the
missions of LEED and a project is awarded with any of the four levels of LEED

BEACH RESORT 14
ceritification, depending on how many points it has achieved: Certified (40 to 49); Silver
(50 to 59 points); Gold (60 to 79 points); and Platinum (higher than 80 points). LEED
serves “to enhance environmental awareness among architects and building contractors,
and to encourage the design and construction of energy-efficient, water-conserving
buildings that use green resources and materials.

There are nine categories of a green building project:

 Sustainable Sites  Location

 Water Efficiency  Awareness and Education
 Energy and Atmosphere  Innovation in Design
 Materials and Resources  Regional Priority
 Indoor Environmental Quality

In his third topic which is Going BERDE. He wrote that here in the Philippines, the Building
for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence or the BERDE Program, which was
created in 2009 by the Philippine Green Building Council (PHILBGC) “as an appropriate
response to the Philippine building industry’s need to proactively address the negative
impacts of climate change. “The BERDE Program is like the LEED, as it certifies buildings
according to how much green building it is.

Bamboo

Once thought of as the building material of the poor, bamboo is now being used more
prominently in all types of architecture. From houses to business buildings, there are more
and more places that are being built with bamboo as a main material or at least an
accenting material of the architecture.

Bamboo is a unique building material in that it is strong in both rigidity and density. While
tensile strength remains the same throughout the age of the bamboo plant, the plant fiber
strength increases as it gets older. There is some controversy in determining proper
testing protocols though and is still under debate. To utilize bamboo to its utmost potential,

BEACH RESORT 16
several conditions are important to consider. One factor is that bamboo grown on slopes
is stronger than bamboo grown in valleys, and that bamboos that grow in poor dry soils
are usually more solid than those grown in rich soils. Bamboo also shrinks diametrically,
and that should be taken into consideration.
There are certain limitations of the use of bamboo in construction due to the nature of the
plant. The starchy interior is attractive to insects, and if not treated can rot, and fill with
insects. In addition, because bamboo has a slick waterproof coating, it cannot be painted
very easily, but it can be accomplished with the right types of paint. Bamboo architecture
is growing in popularity. It has gone from the building material of the poor to the choice of
architects and artists with rapid ambition. While the world isn't yet ready for whole cities
made out of bamboo, it is certainly ready for homes made of it, and it seems to be coming
in the near future.
