TECTONIC PLATES
ACTIVITY 1.1

Objectives:

1. Identify the different Tectonic Plates

2. Trace the relative location of the Major Plates

What Is Plate Tectonics?

Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into
several plates that glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core.

Earth’s Tectonic Plates

The plates act like a hard and rigid shell compared to Earth's mantle.
This strong outer layer is called the lithosphere, which is 100 km (60 miles)
thick. The lithosphere includes the crust and outer part of the mantle. Below
the lithosphere is the Asthenosphere, which is malleable or partially
malleable, allowing the lithosphere to move around.

You'll notice that the majority plates are part continental and part
oceanic. Take the North American plate, for instance. Its western half is
dominated by the North American continent, however its eastern half forms
part of the Atlantic Ocean basin. In comparison, the Pacific plate is essentially
all oceanic.
Now, your task is to locate and Name the different Tectonic Plates below. Write
your answer on the space provided.
