From this experiment, the thermodynamic cycle of vapour – compression heat pump and refrigerator were studied. The heat pump worked on a vapour-compression cycle in which the refrigerant flew through for process which are, evaporation at low pressure and temperature, compression to high pressure, condensation at high temperature and temperature and lastly the expansion by throttling from high pressure to low pressure. By knowing two variables it was possible to obtain the value of the third unknown and for this purpose the pressure-enthalpy diagram was used. The COP value can be observed by the work input of the compressor or by the work applied to the fluid. The value depends on the variation temperature of the test, state point of the properties and the work applied to the fluid. When the difference between the condensing and evaporating pressures decreased, the Win input to the compressor at a specific Q refrigeration effect also decreased. Hence, the COP value increased. The overall heat transfer between R141b and water in the evaporator and condenser were also determined. In this experiment, heat transfer rate for both evaporator and condenser increase with condensing temperature. This might be due to reading error. In conclusion, there slight error in this experiment as the calculated results varies from the theoretical results. But overall, the objectives of the experiment were successfully achieved.
