BG of the Study (JED): Pigs share a mutual relationship with humans. We raise and protect them as
livestock, which in turn gives us food, we also use them as a source of leather material and their hairs can
be used in making brushes.Pigs can also become a candidate of xenotransplantation which we can utilize
to add progress in the medical field In spite of all that we are still unsure whether we are safe from the
parasites of the pig therein. As statistics say, most pigs contain parasites specifically worms, helminths
that are dangerous to the health of the animal and its consumers. These worms are commonly Ascarids
or more specifically Ascaris suum. Pigs are infected with this parasite due to the consumption of ascarid
eggs found in unclean environment like their enclosed farms. Humans can also be infected with this
parasite due to the consumption of pork of an infected pig. In which it induces Ascariasis that adheres
swelling of the abdomen, diarrhea, bloody excrements and many more gastrointestinal complications
Muntingia calabura or commonly known in the Philippines as “Aratiles” is a type of fruit very common in
the Philippines. It is not sold in the market due to its availability and its leaves contain tannins that are
used to eradicate parasites such as the Ascaris suum.

Statement of the Problem (DANA): This research aims to determine if the Muntingia calabura (Aratiles)
methanolic leaf extract has an anthelmintic effect against Ascaris suum (Roundworm). Specifically, this
research project seeks to answer the following questions:

 Does Muntingia calabura (Aratiles) Methanolic leaf extract have a significant effect on the
mortality rate of Ascaris suum (Roundworm)?
 Is there a significant difference between the varying concentrations of Muntingia calabura
(Aratiles) Methanolic leaf extract and Ascaris suum?

Significance of the Study (ADRIAN): Our study will be a big help to decrease the number of humans
having ascariasis. It could also help agencies like Department of health, department of science and
technology, National swine and poultry Research and Development center ,Accredited swine breeders of
the Philippines, food and agriculture organization, department of Agriculture and future researchers.

Scope and Limitations (ADRIAN): For the Scope and limitations, the study will only focus on the
anthelmintic property of muntingia calabura specifically its leaves to test the mortality rate of the
parasitic worm, ascaris suum and not its larvae. The study will have 3 replications. Aratiles will be
collected in JDC Building Aguinaldo highway, Imus Cavite. And Muntingia Calabura will be collected near
the tricycle terminal in Salawag, Dasmarinas cavite. The study will be conducted in the biological
Laboratory of Bacoor National High School-molino main. The methanolic extract will be 4% and 8% ,
and the contact time will be 12 and 24 hours.

Conceptual Framework (ELLY): This figure depicts the Conceptual Paradigm of the study. The
Anthelmintic Effect of Muntingia calabura (Aratiles) Methanolic Leaf Extract being the independent
variable and the Mortality rate of Ascaris suum being the dependent variable. The different varying
concentrations of the methanolic Leaf extract will be tested against Ascaris suum in different contact time.
The presence of the phytochemical , tannins in the methanolic leaf extract will be the component that will
help eradicate Ascaris suum.

Research Design (ARMON): For the research design the researchers will use post-test only group design and
based on the table: the researchers will use 2 contact times; 24 and 48 Hours and 3 Experimental variables; 4%, 8%
and controlled/negative control.

Experimental Design (ELLY): The flowchart shows the run of procedures which were followed by the researchers.
These methods include data gathering procedure that was executed to obtain the data needed. So first is the
Collection of Muntingia calabura leaf samples for extraction and phytochemical screening, Preparation of Muntingia
calabura (Aratiles) Methanolic Leaf Extract, Phytochemical Screening, Collection of Ascaris suum (Roundworms),

Application of the Methanolic leaf extract into the Ascaris suum, Data Gathering, Data Analysis, and lastly is the
findings and results.

Statistical Analysis (DANA): the researchers will use T-test and One Way Analysis of Variance. T-test will be used
for the significant effect on the mortality rate of Ascaris suum while for the significant difference, One Way Analysis of
Variance will be used between the varying concentratons and contact time. The varying concentrations are 4%, 8%
and a negative control also having the contact time which are
