1. What is the problem of the study?

The study aims to determine whether or not the Black Jellyfish (Chrysaora achlyos) is capable of
killing the Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata).

2. What is the purpose of the study?

To find new ways on preventing pests using the Black Jellyfish (Chrysaora achlyos) extracts.
Particularly on farmers that have had encounters with low crop production due to external influences
caused by pests like the Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata).

3. What is the rationale of the study?

The Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) are one of the common pests that affects the
crops of the native farmers in the Philippines. These Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) can
quickly spread through the waterways and irrigation canals; but by the time they reach the rice and
wheat fields, they start to feed day and night on the young crops.

Pesticides have been the most common counter-measure that farmers have opt to resolving the
problems caused by the Golden Apple Snail. But most of these pesticides are expensive for most farmers,
and harmful to the environment.

The Black Jellyfish (Chrysaora achlyos) or locally known as Dikya or Salimbubog contains
properties of nematocysts – stinging cells. These nematocysts, when extracted and properly introduced
to the biodiversity of the Golden Apple Snail, can kill the Golden Apple Snails control the harm they
cause, and to an extreme may kill them in the process without causing any adverse effect to the
environment or the human population who benefits from the crops.

4. What is the theoretical background of the study?

The use of the Black Jellyfish’s nematocysts is a natural and eco-friendly solution to the problems
that the Golden Apple Snail causes which threatens the rice and wheat fields of most Filipino farmers.
The porin and hypnotoxin are common properties found in venoms of jellyfishes, corals, and anemones
(collectively knows as Cnidarian creatures).

The porin, which is mostly a combination of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and various
amino acides arranged in long strands release chemicals in the blood, usually in the form of potassium.
This potassium may kill any living creature as too much potassium pumped in the blood may cause
cardiac arrest which prohibits the nerves from sending signals necessary for the muscles in the heart,
thus causing lower or irregular heart rate and, in extreme cases, cardiac arrest.

6. Who can benefits the study?

 Filipino farmers – for the crops they raise

 General public – for the produce they consume

 Future generation – for possible exploration and development of beneficial use of the Black
Jellyfish’s extracts

7. What is the research method of the study?

The researchers made use of 30 Black Jellyfishes and 30 Golden Apple Snails. The set-up made
was to use: (1) Set-up A, 15 Black Jellyfishes Crushed, and (2) Set-up B, 15 as Sun dried.

The extracts produced by both set-ups are then used on the Golden Apple Snails, divided into
two groups of 15. The effects are then measured through time intervals as to how many Golden Apple
Snails die within: (1) 30mins, (2) 1 hour, and (3) 2 hours from introduction of either extracts from Set-ups
A or B.

8. What is the result, findings, conclusion and recommendation?

Based on the statistical analysis, a computed value of 9.91992656 produced at a tabular value of
5% level significance with 6.314 that suggests the acceptable efficacy of the Black Jellyfish extracts.

The researchers have determined that the Black Jellyfish extracts are capable of killing the
Golden Apple Snails, which is a better, cheaper, and more eco-friendly alternative.

Based on the researchers’ data, the Crushed Black Jellyfish extracts are more potent than the
Sun dried ones.
