HOW YOU’LL BE
GRADED
Thickness (Consistency)
• Your weld should have the same consistency from start
to finish. I would give this weld a grade of a C on
Levelness consistency because of the speeding up and the
Thickness of the weld slowing down I performed while welding.
Placement of the weld Placement
of the weld • The placement of the weld is the angle that you hold
your gun while welding, compared to the steel you’re
welding on. Ideally, when welding, the angle of your
gun should be at a 45º angle when welding a 90º angle. The
grade that I would give the placement of this weld
would be a B.
Levelness
• The levelness of the weld has to do with the
placement and the consistency of the weld. In order
for your weld to be level, you have to maintain a
consistent speed and you have to keep your gun at
45º while welding. The right side of this weld is perfect as far as
levelness goes but you can see the unevenness of the left side. I
would grade this weld with a C because it is not perfectly level
all of the way across.
GOOD WELD VS. BAD WELD
Reasons this weld is good
• Very consistent
• The placement is level
and straight
• The weld is as thick as
Reasons this weld is bad
the steel
• Very inconsistent
(welder varied speed
while laying the bead)
• Spatter has not been
cleaned off of the
steel
• The weld is not level
• Stopped the weld
short of the end
• Angle is not set
