0 Analysis of the product

Farming and farm machinery have continued to evolve from traditional to the modern
technology. Agricultural Machinery devices used to till soil and to plant, cultivate, and harvest
crops. Since ancient times, when cultures first began cultivating plants, people have used tools
to help them grow and harvest crops. They used pointed tools to dig and keep soil loosened,
and sharp, knifelike objects to harvest ripened crops. Modifications of these early implements
led to the development of small hand tools that are still used in small-scale gardening, such as
the spade, hoe, rake, trowel, and scythe, and larger implements, such as plows and larger rakes
that are drawn by humans, animals, or simple machines

The threshing machine has given way to the combine, usually a self-propelled unit that either
picks up windrowed grain or cuts and threshes it in one step. The grain binder has been replaced
by the swathe which cuts the grain and lays it on the ground in windrows, allowing it to dry
before being harvested by a combine. Plows are not used nearly as extensively as before, due
in large part to the popularity of minimum tillage to reduce soil erosion and conserve moisture.
The disk harrow today is more often used after harvesting to cut up the grain stubble left in the
field. Although seed drills are still used, the air seeded is becoming more popular with farmers.
Today's farm machinery allows farmers to cultivate many more acres of land than the machines
of yesterday.

One of the machine that continue improvise is tractor. Tractors have traditionally been used on
farms to mechanise several agricultural tasks. Modern tractors are used for ploughing, tilling
and planting fields in addition to routine lawn care, landscape maintenance, moving or
spreading fertiliser and clearing bushes.Tractors offer advantages on small farms as well as in
regular lawn and garden work. This article discusses the various benefits of using tractors to
mechanise farming, gardening or even excavating tasks.

1
The Benefit of the tractor:

Wide range

Tractors are available in a wide range of options to suit specific tasks and requirements.
Subcompact or compact tractors available in a horsepower range of 15hp to 40hp are ideal for
heavy duty landscaping jobs and tasks such as digging, hauling or ploughing on large gardens,
fields and pastures.

A smaller version of compact tractors, subcompact tractors have the power and versatility to
perform a large range of gardening tasks including mowing, moving mulch and tilling gardens.
Compact tractors are a smaller version of utility tractors and are ideal for landscaping tasks.

Also known as diesel tractors, utility tractors are recommended for mechanising complex
farming tasks and come in different models with a horsepower range of 45hp to 110hp. A wide
range of farming implements can be attached to utility tractors to help accomplish various jobs.

Versatility

Though available in a wide range of models, modern tractors are designed and manufactured
to offer versatility in performing a wide range of tasks. Compact tractors can accomplish tasks
ranging from gardening to simple farming jobs, with the ability to do more by attaching various
implements such as front loaders or back hoes.

Power and durability

Tractors are typically designed with powerful engines to run over rough terrain and pull
extremely heavy loads, making them effective in tough farming or landscape tasks. Modern
tractors also come with cast iron front axles for extra strength and durability.

Ease of transmission and operation

2
Modern tractors feature power shift transmission and hydrostatic transmission to simplify
operation. While these tractors are also provided with power steering to make turning much
easier, advanced models help reduce operator fatigue with exclusive shift controls and an
automatically responsive transmission.

Ease of installing gardening and farming implements

Modern tractors allow a wide range of gardening and farming implements including front end
loader attachments or back hoes to be attached to help perform a wider range of tasks.

A three-point hitch attaches an implement, secures it in place and also lifts and lowers the
implement while the PTO (power take-off) is a shaft that goes from the tractor to the implement
and transfers the tractor’s engine power to it.

More than Farming

Tractors are some options available to meet specific tasks and requirements. Compact tractors
are ideal for heavy duty landscaping and tasks such as digging, hauling or plowing in large
gardens, fields and pastures. Subcompact tractors have the power and versatility to perform a
wide range of horticultural tasks, including mowing, quilting and moving machining gardens.
Cleaning is recommended for agricultural tractors with complex tasks and available in several
models. There are also accessories such as front loaders and rear hoes, which help to carry out
many works works.

Not complicated
Tractors are often designed with powerful motors for driving on difficult terrain and dragging
of extremely heavy loads. Modern tractors also contain iron front axle for strength and
durability. Today the tractors are equipped with a gear-shift function under load and hydrostatic
transmission for ease of operation.

Although these tractors are equipped with power steering to make change easier, improved
models help reduce operator fatigue with the exclusive management of the shifter and sensitive
automatic transmission.

Weakness of Tractor

Need more investment in new technologies

Given the scale of expansion and different geographies the company is planning to expand into,
Tractor Supply needs to put more money in technology to integrate the processes across the
board. Right now the investment in technologies is not at par with the vision of the
company .Limited success outside core business . Even though Tractor Supply is one of the
leading organizations in its industry it has faced challenges in moving to other product
segments with its present culture.

High attrition rate in work force

compare to other organizations in the industry Tractor Supply has a higher attrition rate and
have to spend a lot more compare to its competitors on training and development of its
employees. There are gaps in the product range sold by the company. This lack of choice can
give a new competitor a foothold in the market .The profitability ratio and Net Contribution of
Tractor Supply are below the industry average. Financial planning is not done properly and
efficiently. The current asset ratio and liquid asset ratios suggest that the company can use the
cash more efficiently than what it is doing at present.

2.0 History

Agricultural machinery is machinery used in farming or other agriculture. There are many
types of such equipment, from hand tools and power tools to tractors and the countless kinds
of farm implements that they tow or operate. Diverse arrays of equipment are used in both
organic and nonorganic farming. Especially since the advent of mechanised agriculture,
agricultural machinery is an indispensable part of how the world is fed.

The Industrial revolution

With the coming of the Industrial Revolution and the development of more complicated
machines, farming methods took a great leap forward. Instead of harvesting grain by hand with
a sharp blade, wheeled machines cut a continuous swath. Instead of threshing the grain by
beating it with sticks, threshing machines separated the seeds from the heads and stalks. The
first tractors appeared in the late 19th century.

Steam power

Power for agricultural machinery was originally supplied by ox or other domesticated animals.
With the invention of steam power came the portable engine, and later the traction engine, a
multipurpose, mobile energy source that was the ground-crawling cousin to the steam
locomotive. Agricultural steam engines took over the heavy pulling work of oxen, and were
also equipped with a pulley that could power stationary machines via the use of a long belt.
The steam-powered machines were low-powered by today's standards but, because of their size
and their low gear ratios, they could provide a large drawbar pull. Their slow speed led farmers
to comment that tractors had two speeds: "slow, and damn slow."

Internal combustion engines

The internal combustion engine; first the petrol engine, and later diesel engines; became the
main source of power for the next generation of tractors. These engines also contributed to the
development of the self-propelled, combined harvester and thresher, or combine harvester (also
shortened to 'combine'). Instead of cutting the grain stalks and transporting them to a stationary
threshing machine, these combines cut, threshed, and separated the grain while moving
continuously through the field.

11
Types

Combines might have taken the harvesting job away from tractors, but tractors still do the
majority of work on a modern farm. They are used to push implements—machines that till the
ground, plant seed, and perform other tasks.

Tillage implements prepare the soil for planting by loosening the soil and killing weeds or
competing plants. The best-known is the plow, the ancient implement that was upgraded in
1838 by John Deere. Plows are now used less frequently in the U.S. than formerly, with offset
disks used instead to turn over the soil, and chisels used to gain the depth needed to retain
moisture.

The most common type of seeder is called a planter, and spaces seeds out equally in long rows,
which are usually two to three feet apart. Some crops are planted by drills, which put out much
more seed in rows less than a foot apart, blanketing the field with crops. Transplants automate
the task of transplanting seedlings to the field. With the widespread use of plastic mulch, plastic
mulch layers, transplants, and seeders lay down long rows of plastic, and plant through them
automatically.

After planting, other implements can be used to cultivate weeds from between rows, or to
spread fertilizer and pesticides. Hay balers can be used to tightly package grass or alfalfa into
a storable form for the winter months.

Modern irrigation relies on machinery. Engines, pumps and other specialized gear provide
water quickly and in high volumes to large areas of land. Similar types of equipment can be
used to deliver fertilizers and pesticides.

Besides the tractor, other vehicles have been adapted for use in farming, including trucks,
airplanes, and helicopters, such as for transporting crops and making equipment mobile, to
aerial spraying and livestock herd management.

12
Tractor

Most of the agricultural machine has been involved in the evolution of the machinery from
traditional to the modern. Tractor has become one of the machines that involve in the evolution
during these eras.

A tractor is an engineering vehicle specifically designed to deliver at a high tractive effort (or
torque) at slow speeds, for the purposes of hauling a trailer or machinery used in agriculture or
construction. Most commonly, the term is used to describe a farm vehicle that provides the
power and traction to mechanize agricultural tasks, especially (and originally) tillage, but
nowadays a great variety of tasks. Agricultural implements may be towed behind or mounted
on the tractor, and the tractor may also provide a source of power if the implement is
mechanised.

The types of tractor used in agricultural industry

Utility tractor

It is a general type of tractor used for ploughing and pulling any other equipment using its drive.
It is a good option for farmers due to its multi-use as farmers cannot afford different machines
to carry out specific jobs. The Raptor DT is a powerful tractor model which is compact,
powerful, reliable and productive. It is capable of fulfilling increasing demands of modern
agriculture methods through its versatility. The Raptor DT is highly safe equipment that is
designed to work in perfect harmony with the nature.

13
Row crop tractor

It is a multi-purpose machine that is designed to meet almost every agricultural work like
ploughing, pulling seed drills, levelling, harrowing, and weed control. Some of the attributes
of these types of tractors are

 Good ground level clearance

 Easy to steer; can take short turns
 Easy to driver and user-friendly
 Attaching and detaching agricultural attachments is fast and simple
 Good row spacing facility

The Vega series can be your ideal Row Crop Tractor. It has all basic elements of a tractor with
steering wheel. The tractor is designed to meet different requirements of farming activities.
Their easy manoeuvrability and maximum performance makes them ideal for different use and
terrains. The double steering system and their ability to take a turning circle in just 2 meters
makes them perfect tractor for use in restricted places.

14
Orchard tractor

The orchard type tractor is compact and no part of these machines hangs or protrudes outside
the surface. These types of tractor have increased height so that plucking of fruits become easy.
The small size of the tractor makes moving between trucks easy.

The Cobram 40 and 50 models having equal size wheels have two drive versions- rear wheel
drive and front wheel drive. They are ideal for orchard and vineries where heavy tractors are
not suitable. They have optimum steering radius, ideal weight distribution and four wheel drive
mechanism makes them perfect for use on difficult terrains. The Cobram tractors are less noisy
and have emission control mechanisms that make them less polluting. These tractors are
available in mono-directional and reversible version and the seat of the driver, wheel and
dashboard can be reversed in less than 10 seconds. The controls on the tractor and the seat can
be adjusted according to driver’s comfort level.

3.0 Detail of the product

With the advancement of the technology in these eras including in the agricultural industry, the
engineers haven’t been sitting idly, thinking technology is going to do all the work. Equipment
manufacturers around the world are experimenting with ways for electrical equipment to
improve the tractors and implements.

“Electrification is coming – if we can figure out how to keep the price down,” says Tim
Stombaugh, an Extension professor of machine systems automation engineering at the
University of Kentucky. “It is more efficient, is quieter, requires less maintenance, is more
controllable, and is potentially safer and lighter.”

There are two main experiments being conducted on how electric power can be used: one for
diesel-electric tractors and one for battery-powered tractors.

Diesel- electric tractors

Back in 2001, Fendt and AGCO began intensively researching how electric power generated
by an electric tractor could be transferred to an implement. In 2013, the results of that work
went on display for the first time when Fendt presented the X Concept tractor at Agritechnica.

The X Concept is powered by AGCO’s Power four-cylinder diesel engine. The compact design
of the engine allows the tractor to accommodate the necessary components for the electrical
technology, including a high-performance alternator, power electronics, wiring, and the
specialist heat exchanger.

The electrical systems within the X Concept – dubbed the Powerbus – can provide up to 174
hp. to implements through a compact power socket. The system also provides power to the
internal tractor, including the electrical fan drive and the coolant pumps.

To see how this prototype could work on the farm, Fendt also needed to develop a high-voltage,
electrically powered implement. Two years ago, Fendt introduced another prototype: an
electric-driven rotary rake called the Former 12555 X.

“We are confident that electricity will be used more and more in agriculture. This is one
example from Fendt,” says Stephan Bea, head of sales engineering at Fendt.

16
Each rotor on the rake has an integral electric drive powered by the Fendt X Concept tractor.
The torque motors are integrated into each rake socket, eliminating the need for separate
housing, gearbox, or bearings.

Because each motor is regulated independently, you are able to vary the speed of each rotor.
For example, you can turn the front rotors more quickly than the rear. The speed of the rotors
is also no longer dependent on the engine or the ground speed of the tractor. This makes it
easier to react quickly to different crop situations.

“The electric-powered rake is working well under various conditions, and it passed several
field tests during the past two years,” says Benno Pichlmaier, AGCO.

In addition to working on its own implements, AGCO is also working with external partners
in other key areas, including hay, seeding, plant protection, and harvesting.

Because there is a low demand for this technology, Pichlmaier admits there is no need for a
quick launch. “Current mechanical and hydraulic systems will remain in place for a long time,”
he says.

However, he does believe that electric power systems will play more and more of a significant
role. “We are convinced that electric power will be used for special tractor-implement
combinations in the future,” says Pichlmaier.

Battery – powered tractor

AGCO isn’t the only major OEM working on ways that electric power can be used in farm
equipment. At the end of 2016, John Deere introduced a prototype for an all-electric tractor.
Nicknamed SESAM (sustainable energy supply for agricultural machinery), the battery-
powered tractor has all the functions and features of a standard tractor, yet it offers the benefits
of electrification.

The tractor is modeled on John Deere’s 6R series tractors. Two electric motors operate an
adapted DirectDrive transmission, producing 174 hp. of continuous power and peak power of
400 hp. One motor powers the drivetrain; the other motor is used for the PTO and auxiliaries.

17
If necessary, both motors are linked to supply full power for driving or for PTO and hydraulic
work.

One battery charge lasts up to four operating hours in mixed-mode operations or for 34 miles
of travel. The battery takes three hours to charge and can be charged up to 3,100 times.

When the machine is at idle, there are no energy losses. The SESAM tractor is emissions-free
and runs at a lower noise level than traditional tractors.

According to a news release from John Deere, the tractor is an elementary component of John
Deere’s vision of future energy autonomous farms. “The John Deere all-electric tractor was
designed and created to help evaluate the feasibility of such a tractor and to demonstrate John
Deere’s advanced, innovative expertise and capabilities in producing a battery-powered tractor
for agricultural use,” the release stated.

Self-driving cars have grabbed headlines in recent months and years, and nobody will be
surprised if this technology changes the face of travel in the next decade or so. What may be a
bit surprising, however, is the much quieter revolution that’s been altering the farming industry
for over a decade.

While Google works tirelessly to present a truly self-driving car, for decades, U.S. farmers
have been using similar technologies that give them a tactical approach to planting, harvesting
and maintaining their crops.

Autonomous tractors use a lot of the same advanced sensors and systems that a true self-driving
vehicle would. Most tractors sold in the U.S. already include auto-steering systems that give
additional control even in low-visibility situations. By implementing these advanced features
in everyday farming, growers can really put the power of tech to work.

Price

The tractor price is different for each type. The range price is from $15 000 until $100 000.
Some of the tractor also can up to $200 000 until $700 000.

18
4.0 How to promote and commercialize technology

Technology commercialization is the process of converting ideas into business and

consequentially, jobs. It plays a critical role in economic development, as it effectively transfer
ideas from the mind or the laboratory to the marketplace. Commercialization is the process
through which such value is infused into an innovation by coupling the innovation with the
business development necessary to build a revenue and job producing entity.

Opportunity

Identify the scientific and commercial value of the discovery. It is simply where there is
customer that willing to pay for your technology in the market that meets the needs either real
or perceived. The process includes cultivating a professional network in your field of expertise,
research and documentation.

19
5.0 Future trends

For the future improvement and innovation of the tractor, it will give more benefit and can
reduce time for farmer. There was a time when a tractor was a simply a machine that was big
and strong enough to pull other farming equipment. Not anymore. From tractors that drive
themselves to others that can text you when the job is done, the tractor have come a long way
since early days of farming. Tractor has improved a lot from the early uses.

Farmers now days have become more competitive as they looking for every way when there is
upside to the current down economy. This includes finding and using technological advances
that have been designed to make farming for efficient and more productive.

The tractor now have been equipped with the cutting edge technology, where that agricultural
equipment makers have been developed that gather and use for analytics and actual application.
The two elements that have been adding to the tractor which is GPS and remote sensing in the
race make the farming more precise.

Tractors also soon to be a made- self driving as like as the build- self driving car. With that
map fields, driving themselves and calibrates its movement to within inches in order to
minimize fuel waste and of fertilizer or seed. All these advancement in tractor technology is a
motivation to stimulate production.

The invention of powerful engines and innovative design allows for cultivation, plowing,
tillage and whatever else your farming operations call for. Take, for instance, Fendt CVT
Transmission with the highest horsepower ranges and infinite speed selection capabilities.

The uses of engines with long lifespans, low running costs, high levels of power and torque
and low noise. Consider AGCO’s SCR- based (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology,
which allows engines to run more efficiently – optimizing combustion yet reducing polluting
particulate matter.

20
6.0 Conclusion

The improvement and innovation in this modern era has become a must and required for a
technological advancement. It will give lots of benefit for the farmer when they have innovation
agricultural tools. During these times, agricultural tools have improved a lot since the beginning.
People have given opportunity for the agricultural tools to be innovating for the farmer’s use.
Farmers have willingly to spend more money for the tools in order to save time and energy for
them rather than do it manual or taking lots of time. Agricultural tools have become important
just like other technological tools in daily use. I believe that agricultural tools can become more
innovate in the future for the farmer’s usefulness in their daily life.
