Cyclon Idai floods the streets and displaces families

Dear Emma,

As updates continue to come in from our colleagues on the ground, we are deeply saddened by the loss
of lives and the injuries following the devastating Cyclone Idai that hit Mozambique, Zimbabwe and
Malawi last week. But there are thousands of families that have survived and in need of our help.

Therese and her children outside of what they once called home.

Therese tells us about her family's horrific experience coming face to face with Cyclone Idai: 

" It was raining heavily and I thank God that none of my foster children sleeping in the mud brick
house were hurt when it collapsed. I have six children, I need more support to restore my
household and for all my children to feel safe again" . 

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is on the ground providing lifesaving support to families like Therese,
but we are in urgent need of increased funding.

We are already working with our partners to relocate families, but emergency shelters are crowded and
power supplies, boreholes and latrines have been damaged, creating the risk of the spread of deadly
diseases such as cholera.

We urgently need your support. 

Based on the initial assessments, the most immediate needs in the camp include: 
• At least 300 family tents
• 2 new water tanks
• 12,000 square meters of plastic sheeting for construction of a makeshift kitchen and repairing shelters
• Water purification tablets
