Manning Equation which is based on Chezy's Equation, is a common method to

calculate the free surface flow or fluid flow within a channel.

For Manning Equation, the roughness coefficient in Chezy Equation is calculated as:

C=K [(R0.125)/n]

Where:
C = Chezy's roughness coefficient
R = Hydraulics Radius
n = Manning's Equation
K = constant

Substituting the calculated roughness into Chezy equation, one can obtain Manning
equation:

Q = [K/n]AR2/3 S1/2

Where:
Q = discharge
K = constant
n = manning roughness coefficient
A = Flow area
R = Hydraulic Radius
S = Slope Friction

Manning equation was presented by the French Engr. Philippe Gauckler in 1867,
and later re-developed by the irish Engr. Robert Manning in 1890. Manning equation
was introduced by the Irish Engr. Robert Manning in 1889 as an alternative to the
Chezy Equation. It is one of the most commonly used equation governing open
channel flow. That’s why it is called Manning Equation.
Manning Equation is an empirical equation that describe the relationship between
the velocity in a conduit and the channel geometry, slope and a friction coefficient
expressed as a Manning n. It can compute the flow in an open channel, Compute the
friction losses in a channel, derive the capacity of a pipe, check the performances of
an area-velocity flow meter, and has many more application.
