Exercise (3)

1 - A box shaped barge, length 30 m, breadth 8 m and depth 6 m, floats at an even keel draft
to 4 m in saltwater of relative density 1.025, has 500 tonnes of ore spread over the midship
half-length and two cases of machinery each weight 20 tonnes, measuring 2 m × 2 m × 2 m,
stowed on the center line 5 m from each end.

Construct a curve of loads for the still water condition assuming the weight of the barge to be
evenly distributed over the full length and from it draw curves for shear force and bending
moments.

2 - A prismatic box-shape barge is 60 m length and displaces 900 tonnes of salt water when it
is fully loaded. If the weight distribution for each half of the barge is constant over 10 m at
middle of the barge and equal w , then it decreases linearly to half after 10 m, 0.5w ,
afterwards it becomes constant for the remainder 10 m. determine the maximum values of
shearing force and bending moment. Sketch the curves of weight, buoyancy, load and
shearing force.

3 - For a tanker of 130 m length, the weight of hull, machinery and equipment is 4290 tonnes
and may be regarded as uniformly distributed fore and aft. For a condition of loading in
which the compartments over 22 m of length amidships are empty and over 32 m forward and
abaft these compartments there is a uniform loading of 115 tonnes/m. Determine the bending
moment amidships. The curve of buoyancy is a second degree parabola with zero ordinates at
each end of the vessel.

4 – A landing craft of length 61 m may be assumed to have a rectangular cross-section of

beam of 8.53 m. when empty, drafts are 0.46 m forward and 1.07 m aft and its weight is made
up of general structure weight assumed evenly distributed throughout the length, and
machinery and superstructure weight spread evenly over the last 12.2 m. A load of 101.6
tonne can be carried evenly distributed over the first 48.8 m, but to keep the forward draft at a
maximum of 0.61 m, ballast water must be added evenly to the after 12.2 m.

Draw the load, shearing force and bending moment diagrams for the loaded craft when in still
water of specific volume 0.975 m3 / tonne . Determine the position and value of the
maximum bending moment acting on the craft.
