Exercise (5)

1 – A ship 120 m long is subjected to a loading condition which gives the following ordinates
for the curve of M I in MN.m m 4 , at equidistant stations commencing from the aft
perpendicular:

0, 10.1, 19.7, 23.8, 23.3, 19.7, 14.2, 7.6, 0

Calculate the deflection of the keel at amidships relative to a line through its ends, E = 200
GPA.

2 – At consecutive stations 14 m apart throughout the length of a vessel commencing at the

after perpendicular, the bending moments due to filling the deep tank when the vessel is at
rest in still water are respectively (in KN.m):

0, 1367, 13029, 42670, 59222, 27637, 9870, 1974, 0, 0, 0

The moments of inertia of the longitudinally continuous material in these sections, about the
neutral axis of the section (in m4 ) are:

0, 12.287, 18.28, 20.379, 20.528, 20.528, 20.379, 19.78, 17.98, 14.38, 0

Draw to scale the curves of M , I , M I , E. dv dx , and E.v , assuming that E = 200 GN m 2 .

Determine the maximum deflection of the keel.
