CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
A liftboat is a type of vessel that is self-elevating and self-propelled, and used for a variety
of purposes in offshore marine industry, be it oil and gas or windfarms. Some call them as
jack-up barges, self-elevating liftboats or lift barges. A liftboat has legs to lift itself,
propulsion to move, accommodation, deck space and cranes. When it comes to the oil and
gas industry, the main usage (approx. 70%) of liftboats is operations and maintenance
(OPEX) related activities, with c. 30% being CAPEX and large projects related [1].
Liftboats are incredibly flexible and versatile vessels catering to a range of offshore needs,
to support:
• Additional accommodation
• Well intervention work such as coiled tubing, wireline, snubbing and enhanced oil
recovery techniques
• Drilling support, completions and testing
• Greenfield platform construction, hookup and commissioning
• Brownfield maintenance, repair and expansion
• Well abandonment and decommissioning
The biggest advantages of using liftboats (self-propelled) is its mobility and safety, i.e. it
can move on its own (without any tug vessels) and once the legs are settled, it is very stable.
Once the liftboat is moved to a location, a preload operation (filling tanks with water and
jack up just above the wave heights) is conducted to ensure that the pads on the legs are
settled in the seabed (can take a few hours), after which the water is dumped, and the lift
boat is elevated to the required height. Generally, a seabed site survey is conducted prior
to a move, to ensure that the proposed location is free of debris and obstructions, and the
topography of the location is known, to avoid can holes and pipelines [1].
Liftboats could be 3-legged and 4-legged. The former is cheaper to build and operate,
whereas the later is costlier. Yet, a 4-legged liftboat is quicker to set up (by approx. 4 hr)
than a 3-legged one. In addition, it is widely recognized (although questionable sometimes)
that a 4-legged lift boat is safer and more stable. Over 10 year ago, the large majority of
the fleet (more than 90%) consisted of 3-legged vessels. Yet, this ratio is changing, as more
preference is given to 4-legged liftboats, with majority of new build being 4-legged. As of
mid-2018, 75% of the global fleet is 3-legged and 25% is 4-legged. This 3-leg vs. 4-leg is
particularly evident in the Middle East region – most of the liftboats and requirements in
the region are 4-leg [1].
Liftboats are generally differentiated by classes and types. Class size in ft used to express
the length of the legs and subsequently operating water depth. Classification starts at Class
65’ all the way up to Class 335’. As a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the larger the
liftboat is [1].

1.1.2 Supply
As of late-2018, globally there are circa 200 liftboats operating ( and 10 under
construction), with 122 being in the Gulf of Mexico, 43 units in the Middle East, 25 in
Northern Europe, 6 in South East Asia and up to 4 in West Africa. More than 70% of the
units are operating within oil and gas industry only, 25% being flexible and used both oil
and gas and wind industry, with c.5% of units used only by the wind energy industry.
Utilization levels of liftboats are increasing with a potential to show fairly high
improvements in 2018 [1].
Middle East
• 2016 – 50%-55%
• 2017 – 60%-65%
• 2018e – 80%-85%
South East Asia
• 2016 – 75%
• 2017 – 50%-75%
• 2018e – 75%-90%
Largest operators/owners of the liftboats in the Middle East are GMS and Zakher Marine,
controlling around 50% of the regional market. This is followed by Ezion Holding / Teras
Offshore [1].
Global supply of liftboats by POB size and region of deployment. What is noticeable, the
primary user of liftboats with high POB number (150+) is the Middle East [1].

redundancy, material grades and shock loads are different between jack-ups and liftboats
[1].
jack-up drilling rigs can do much of the work that and more (they can drill) a liftboat can
do however are typically much more expensive - both in terms of hire and AHTS support
required to move the rig [1].
1.5 ADVANTAGES OF LIFTBOATS
Liftboats have historically proven to be a cost-effective offshore service vessel. Major
advantages include lower down time, no need for tug assists, stable work platform in the
elevated position, negates the need for jack-up drilling rigs in a lot of cases, and negates
the need for derrick barges in a lot of cases. They can be used for all types of offshore
construction and maintenance to well intervention services like wire-line, coiled tubing,
and nitrogen. They have even been used to build high-rise bridges [1].

The FEM is a powerful computational tool that has been widely used in the design of complex
marine structures over the decades. The basic idea behind the FEM is to divide the structure into
a large number of finite elements. These elements may be one, two, or three-dimensional. The
finite element model may be in the form of a truss of members connected at nodal points, or a
detailed assembly of elements representing an entire structure, or even a particularly complex and
critical component of the structure. Taking an irregularly shaped plate, for example, the
displacements and consequently the stresses within the plate under a given load for a specified
material and boundary conditions can be estimated. The field variable of interest here is the
displacement. Instead of determining the displacement at every point in the plate, the FEM divides
the plate into a finite number of elements and provides the displacements at the nodal points of
each element. Interpolation functions are used within each element to describe the variations of
the field variable (e.g., displacement in this example) as a function of the local coordinates. Using
nodal displacements and the interpolation function, the designer can compute the stress variation
within any given region [2].
- Beam element with axial, torsional and bi-directional shear and bending stiffness
with constant properties along the length of the element [3].
For plates:
- Membrane plate element (i.e., plane-stress element) with bi-axial and in-plane
shear stiffness and constant thickness [3].
- Bending plate element with in-plane stiffness as the membrane element plus out-
of-plane bending stiffness and constant thickness [3].
These four simple types of elements are considered enough to represent the hull structures
even though higher order element types exist [3].
In the areas where high-stress concentrations may occur, local fine-mesh models are to be
applied by using forces or forced deformations as boundary conditions, based on the results
obtained in the global analysis [2].
The size of the model should be such that the calculated hot-spot stresses are not affected
significantly by assumptions made for boundary conditions. Element sizes for stress
concentration analysis should be of the same order of magnitude as the plate thickness.
Normally, shell elements may be used for the analysis. Only dynamic loads are applied in
the model, because only these affect the fatigue life of the structure [2].
2.1.3 POSTPROCESSING
The design is a complicated and iterative process in which building and solving an FE
model is simply the first step. A more important step is that designers use their knowledge
and judgment to analyze the results, and if necessary redesign or reinforce the structure.
First, the engineer must ensure that the results calculated by the FE program are reasonable,
and that the model and the load application are correct. This can be achieved by plotting
stress contour, deformation, reactions & applied load equilibrium, force &moment
diagrams, etc. The next step is to check the strength of the structure against relevant design
criteria as LRFD and WSD methods [2].
Design by the LRFD method is a design method by which the target safety level is obtained
as closely as possible by applying load and resistance factors to characteristic reference
values of the basic variables. The basic variables are defined as:
• loads acting on the structure.
• or resistance of materials in the structure.
This 3D geometry for global FEA is modeled completely on Ansys Design Modeler using shell
and beam elements. Based on preliminary structural drawings of transverse sections and plan
views made by CDC Scotland limited company.
We idealized and simplified the hull structure as possible for example, some of the construction
configurations in the bottom as braced elements and openings for thruster of the liftboat because
of the lack of information about them. we just modeled the bottom typically as egg box consists
of stiffeners, floors, and girders.
In the next two pages, we show a comparison between the technical structural drawings provided
by CDC Scotland company and our simplified 3D model geometry.
In the bottom, we ignore a lot of structural elements and replace them with simplified elements
due to the complexity and lack of information about them as these drawings are just a preliminary
drawing does not include all details.
Generally, we modeled web frames and girders by plate elements except for the forward and aft
part we modeled them by beam element for simplification and consideration of computation time.
As mention in chapter 2 that we need from global analysis to check the longitudinal strength
especially this matter for vessels that we cannot judge her longitudinal strength with Euler
beam theory and the important thing is that founding deformations values for using them
in boundary condition setup for local models.

3.2.5.2 Deformations
We performed a global analysis primarily to use the deformations to set up the boundary
condition of a partial hull structural model for analysis.
We can see that von Mises stress values are not realistic because there are singularities in the model
due to the simplification and the idealization of the model.
We confirmed that by performing mesh refinement and we found that stress values tend to infinite
when elements size decreases, this indicates to singularities points in the model.
figure 3.19 shows an example of geometry simplifications which causes a singularity in the model
there is a sharp edge between a web of longitudinal girder and transverse bulkhead.
As we make sure these unrealistic stress values are due to singularities in the model and we
consider this area not in our interested in evaluation so simply, we can ignore them and confirm
the deformations values which are correct and realistic in value and visualization.

The inertia coefficient and the drag coefficient are estimated empirically and are influenced
by several parameters including Reynolds number, Keulegan-Carpenter number and
others. The Reynolds number effect on the tube drag coefficient can be considered in Aqwa
[7].
4.14 JOINTS
A hydrodynamic analysis allows structures to be connected by articulated joints. These do
not permit relative translation of the two structures but allow relative rotational movement
in a number of ways that can be defined by the user [9].
• Connectivity – Select the type of connectivity for the joint:
- Fixed Point and Structure.
- Structure and Structure [9].
• Fixed Point – For Connectivity of Fixed Point and Structure, select the fixed point
from a dropdown list of existing fixed points [9].

• Wave angular frequency ω
ω = 2π/T, in rad/s.
• Wave crest height 𝑨𝑪
is the distance from the still water level to the wave crest, in m
• Wave trough depth 𝑨𝑻
is the distance from the still water level to the trough, in m.
• Wave frequency f
Wave frequency is the inverse of the wave period, f = 1/T, in 1/s.

5.2.1.1 Pitch
The up/down rotation of a vessel about its transverse/Y (side-to-side or port-starboard)
axis. An offset or deviation from normal on this axis is referred to as trim or out of trim
[12].
5.2.1.2 Roll
The tilting rotation of a vessel about its longitudinal/X (front-back or bow-stern) axis. An
offset or deviation from normal on this axis is referred to as list or heel. Heel refers to an
offset that is intentional or expected, as caused by wind pressure on sails, turning, or other
crew actions. The rolling motion towards a steady state (or list) angle due to the ship's own
weight distribution is referred in marine engineering as heel. List normally refers to an
unintentional or unexpected offset, as caused by flooding [12].
5.2.1.3 Yaw
The turning rotation of a vessel about its vertical/Z axis. An offset or deviation from normal
on this axis is referred to as deviation or set. This is referred to as the heading of the boat
relative to a magnetic compass (Or true heading if referenced to the true North Pole) [12].
5.2.2.1 Heave
The linear vertical (up/down) motion; excessive downward heave can swamp a ship.
5.2.2.2 Sway
The linear transverse (side-to-side or port-starboard) motion. This motion is generated
directly either by the water and wind currents exerting forces against the hull or by the
ship's own propulsion; or indirectly by the inertia of the ship while turning.
5.2.2.3 Surge
The linear longitudinal (front/back or bow/stern) motion imparted by maritime conditions
[12].

its actual distribution of mass.
Mathematically the radius of gyration is the root mean square distance of the object's parts
from either its center of mass or a given axis, depending on the relevant application. It is
actually the perpendicular distance from point mass to the axis of rotation.
