PRE- PRODUCTION BOOKLET-
Section 1 Auto-tune-
Opinion of auto-tune
Have you every used auto-tune in your Underdogs music, if so why? (give
examples please if so)
During the recording of our first album, Black, there were several occasions
where some of the vocals were shakey. Our producer suggested using
autotuned and showed us what the corrected vocals would sound like. We
decided that we did not like this and instead chose to rerecord the vocals
until the take was good enough.
If Auto tune is used as an effect It has its place, however using it to fix out of
tune or poor vocals reduces the chance that the individual will be good at
singing and instead focus the performance on looks. This I do not believe is
good for the music industry as 'real' talent will be over looked as it does not
have the look that is desired.
10 | P a g e
PRE- PRODUCTION BOOKLET-
I don't think that they are rigged but contestants are chosen not for their
talent but either because they will make good television or that
the people in charge can see a way to sell those individuals to the public.
My opinion is that talent shows have had a negative impact. A label can
make a lot of money from a single hit from a short-term star who will not have
a long career but instead generate a following over a short period until the
'next' big thing comes along, usually from a following season of a similar
programme. This makes it very hard for musicians who have worked hard to
produce their own music to emerge as most major label are more interested
in the less talented, but easier to earn from artists.
Are these shows more about the prize (money) or producing talent and
having a passion for music?
Often these shows contestants are individuals who are just hungry for fame
rather than artists. There are exceptions to this but you will see people who
have been contestants on multiple TV shows some being talent shows and
other game shows etc. This shows they are looking for fame rather than
credible artist. I don't think the contestants are always looking for prize money
however the talent shows are, in my opinion, looking for cash
cows, individuals who will make a quick buck for them.

PRE- PRODUCTION BOOKLET-
Music…. has been around for as long as we can remember and has
remained for people a source of enjoyment, passion and a way
of expressing yourselves. There are many different genres and
sub genres of music that define person’s personality and where
they come from. In this documentary we will be exploring how
music has changed over time and a variety of aspects that may
have influenced this will include auto-tune and talent shows
such X- Factor, to gain the ultimate answer of is music now
about money rather than passion now
Section 1 – Auto-tune
Many artists argue that auto-tune removed all the skill from
singing as well as destroying the minute inaccuracies that
were the soul of many songs. The slight inaccuracies that made
us so human in music have now gone. This is now considered an
essential tool to create a song, in order to get famous as
this is widely used by singers in mainstream music, but mainly
in the hip-hop rap genre. This is both admired and hated by

many artists. As big artists such as Travis Scott, Migos and
Future support the sound as they use this frequently and feel
this is a new movement and more of as form of art rather than
music. Whereas old school rappers such as Jay- Z have openly
spoke about its use in the song D.O.A, death of auto-tune
where he publicly blasted musician’s on its use.

the song last minute leaving the participant with a strong of
anxiety and this have an enormous effect on their life
changing performance. "Why are they so popular?
Looking at the current charts today and the music rich list
and what you would see would partially damage you're eyesight.
It is dominated by pop stars who lack talent but what they
lack in talent they make up in appearance. This is how
mainstream music has become, the image dictates financial
success.

the side allows us to control the shot as this can be used
by hand to gain the most clear and sturdy shots, in a way
it’s a contingency plan for my camera as it holds this

put us behind schedule.

footage is kept without this we would not be able to film
nor move footage on to the computers for editing, this is
a light and tiny piece of equipment which is very fragile
due to the exposed disk on the back which is where the
footage is held.
Nikon A camera which differentiates from the Canon due to Ben Ratcliffe Date: 29th
this being a different brand, this camera unfortunately April– 5 May
does not have as high specs as the Canon camera but it
does film in 1080p allowing us to gain the same quality
footage which means this won’t look weird on screen,
although this may need to be edited in a different editing
file as premier pro reacts with different footage in
multiple ways, this will be used to gain different angles of
the interviewee’s in order to switch between these
sensibly within our production to ensure we keep our
audience’s attention. This solid black Nikon camera is
heavier than the Canon but will still heavily benefit our
documentary’s creativity.
Led lights This contains detachable panels that allow you to Ben Ratcliffe Date: 27th

battery brick on the back which is also detachable this is
so they can be charge much like an eternal battery pack
so that this equipment can be used wirelessly. This can
also be plugged in at the mains to ensure this does not
run out of power at the wrong time as this would cause us
to have too re-record the scene which would put us
behind schedule and potentially this could irritate the
interviewee as they have taken time out of their
productive hours to do this production for us they may
understand this mishap but at the end of the day it’s our
job as a crew to ensure all problems are prevented.

This message which was sent on WhatsApp shows me contacting Steve Brian (Drummer and
part time vocalist for Underdog). Here I have asked him politely and professionally if I could
get his email as this will allow me to be more formal, as the style of message is much
different. I have communicated with him the time we will be arriving, to allow him to
prepare beforehand, this does mean we will have to be punctual with our arrival in order to
communicate professionalism. I have also communicated here that if he has any concerns
or questions to ask me as this conveys consideration of our actors and furthermore
developing their understanding of what is happening on Friday 26th April 2019. Steve right
away replied with “Will you need me for the whole time or will I be able to continue working
while you set up etc”. I which then communicated that he would have free time such as
when we set up and take equipment down, furthermore we can take regular breaks or may
even finish earlier as we have just communicated more time than needed to ensure that we
have more footage than needed and any potential problems that may arise can be
