Preparation Problem for WRI

Course: Hydropower and Pumping Station

Date: May 27, 2018

Problem 1: The Installation data is given as following:

• Q (Flow) = 42 m3/h
• Suction static head: Hga (geometric head inlet) = 3,5 m
• Delivery static head: Hgp (geometric head outlet) = 39 m
• 5 m of DN 100 mm diameter suction pipe complete with 1 gate valve and 1 foot valve
• 70 m of DN 80 mm diameter delivery pipe with 1 non-return valve, 1 Gate valve and 3 sweep
elbows
• Pipe type: new cast iron pipe
• Pump is operated under positive suction head

- Select pump model (Calpeda pump with rotation speed n = 3450 rpm) and defining operation
point including pump characteristic (H, Q, and )

Instruction:

- Calculate the friction loss by Darcy-Weisbach and the losses through fitting with equivalent pipe
length
𝑉2
- The total (manometric) head: 𝐻 = ∑ 𝐻𝑔 + ∑ 𝐻𝑓 + ∑
2𝑔
Problem 2: An existing pump, having the tabulated characteristics, is to be used to pump raw sewage to
a treatment plant through a static lift of 20m. A PVC pipeline 10km of length is used and assuming
roughness coefficient of Hazen-William equal to 140 and the minor loss is about 10% to major loss.

1. Select a suitable commercially available pipe size to achieve a discharge of 60 l/s.

2. Calculate the pump power.

Discharge (l/s) 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70
Total Head (m) 45 44.7 43.7 42.5 40.6 38.0 35.0 31
Overall efficiency (%) - 35 50 57 60 60 53 40
Instruction:
- Calculate the friction loss by Hazen-William
𝑉𝑑2
- The total (manometric) head: 𝐻 = ∑ 𝐻𝑔 + ∑ 𝐻𝑓 +
2𝑔

Problem 3: A pump is used to deliver water from a reservoir located 5m below the pump through a pipe
of diameter DN = 150mm. The water is pumped at a rate of 50 m3/h resulting in a friction loss in the
suction pipe of 3m. Determine the NPSH if the pump is installed at the altitude of 200m above mean
sea level and the water temperature is (a) 20oC and (b) 300C. Instruction:

- Calculate the net positive suction head by 𝑁𝑃𝑆𝐻 = 𝐻𝑎 − 𝐻𝑠 − 𝐻𝑓 − 𝐻𝑣

- Choose the value of Ha and Hv by the table depend on altitude and temperature

Problem 4: It is required to pump water at a rate of 150 m3/h from one reservoir to another reservoir
which has an elevation 20m higher by using a centrifugal pump. This pump is located 2.5m below water
level in lower reservoir. The pipe connecting reservoir has a 100mm inner diameter. The length from the
lower reservoir to the pump is 10m while the length from the pump to higher reservoir is 2,500m.
Assuming friction coefficient = 0.032 and only friction loss through straight pipe is considered.

1. What is the head needed by the pump?

2. Assuming the pump efficiency equal to 60%, calculate the pump power.

Instruction:
- Calculate the friction loss by Darcy-Weisbach
𝑉𝑑2
- The total (manometric) head: 𝐻 = ∑ 𝐻𝑔 + ∑ 𝐻𝑓 +
2𝑔
𝜌𝑔𝐻𝑄
- The pump power: 𝑃 =

Problem 5: An annual river fluctuation is 4 meters. A pump is installed 3 meters above the highest water
level. It pumps water at the flow rate of 50 m3/h to a reservoir about 2,500m away, where the elevation
is 5 meters below the pumping station. Determine the pipe size in order to let the water be able to fill
the elevated tank at the height of 25 meters by Hazen-William and Darcy-Weisbach. Assuming the
maximum pressure losses along the pipe is 18m including 10% of minor losses and the Hazen Williams
coefficient is equal to 140 and friction coefficient = 0.032. Instruction:

𝑉𝑑2
- The total (manometric) head: 𝐻 = ∑ 𝐻𝑔 + ∑ 𝐻𝑓 +
2𝑔
