Destroy Water; You Destroy Life

By : Brandon Fite
Did You Know?
● The Deepwater Horizon oil spill an industrial disaster that began on April 20,
2010, in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect considered
to be the largest marine oil spill in history
Did we learn anything from the BP oil spill?
Introduction
● Occurs when harmful effects result from the entry into the ocean of chemicals,
particles, industrial, agricultural, and residential waste, noise, or the spread of
invasive organisms
● Land based pollutants include oil, septic sludge, dirt, and trash
● Each day thousands of tons of trash and waste are dumped into the oceans of
the world
We need to focus more on solving marine pollution
because:
1. Oceans make up 71% of Earth and provide 95% of all liveable habitat,
2. It is linked to more extreme weather and super storms, and
3. It can lead to human health problems through contamination of water supplies
and the food supply.

What will you drink when water isn’t around to get a sip?
Problem #1
● 12% of the global population rely on fisheries as a livelihood
● Each year 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, stormwater, and industrial
waste are dumped into US water
● Scientists estimate that 60 percent of all seabird species have eaten pieces of
plastic, they predict will rise to 99 percent by 2050.
Problem #2
● The ocean absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere wherever air meets
water
● Wind causes waves and turbulence, giving more opportunity for the water to
absorb the carbon dioxide
● The ocean absorbs CO2 which causes water to become warmer that leads to
hurricanes forming stronger winds

Cause: Rise in water temperature

Effect: Global Warming

Problem #3
● Fish that is consumed by humans or humans drinking contaminated waters
with chemicals can make he/she sick
● It can result in dangerous health problems, which include hormonal issues,
reproductive issues, and damage to our nervous systems and kidneys
● Even low concentrations of lead can cause mental disabilities and physical
disabilities in children, higher levels can lead to coma, convulsions, and death

● Student Led Discussion
● Student survey
● Pictures of rivers connecting to the ocean
The Closing Statement
● Marine pollution is important because most of the world is made up of water,
and the world depends mostly on the ocean. In the words of Jacques
Cousteau: “Pollution of the air or of the land all ultimately ends up in the sea”
