About The Movie “Arrival”, Cesar Torres

I knew about the movie and saw parts of it before seeing it from beginning to end. My
father, the first who saw it, recommended it to me but I did not listen to him; because,
usually I don’t like his taste. But now after seeing the film, I think that he made a good
recommendation of it.

Arrival has what any good dramatic-film should have: a good and original story, sober but
also fascinating special effects, and interesting dialogues (in this case about science and
language). For me, there are not many films that take the job to make you think and, it’s
always a surprise to encounter one that does it. Although, I first considered this was another
alien-related dull movie, I ended up enjoying it.

The theme of changing your perspective of reality after learning a new language is for me Commented [U1]: In my opinion

the most interesting part of the movie. The main character being able to see her entire life
after learning the alien’s language is what captivates you in the plot, that and the funny fact
that she almost get pregnant by the aliens. The protagonist, Louise, is an enigmatic woman
and the fact that she narrates in the beginning of the film a sad future which you first think
is the past is a nice touch.

If it were my choice and I were her, I would try to change the future but maybe it’s not
possible. I think that in her story she is in peace with the sufferings and the happiness that
she has to live; and you have to have both, not only happy times. As she can see her
future, maybe she couldn’t change it, because it could bring a contradiction (she seeing her
future that is not her future anymore); and all things that happen in the future and the past
cannot be changed, I guest.

For that reason I wouldn’t like to see my future either. Because, if it is our future, is written
down and you can’t change it, maybe there are things you wouldn’t like to see and it’s
better to think that anything could happen than to see the unique possibility for your life. I Commented [U2]: An/a

would like to be marveled by my future and for that reason it has to prevail its mystery.

If, against my will, I could see my future I would try to change it only to be free of it and to
have more possibilities than the one that is written for me. Maybe, the movie is wrong and
there’s nothing to see, the future is unwritten and you’re building it step by step.

So, this questions that brings the film show us how a work of art can make you thing about
your life and your own perception of reality. If the movie makes you think about something
different from what you are accustomed, it is a good film. So I think that in this case my
father was right.
