Procedures of conducting the screening (Year 1-4)

1. Two instruments: i) Reading ii) Writing

i) Reading

- 12 constructs / questions
- Carried out individually/ small groups of not more than 3 pupils
- Conducted during lessons (1 period: lesson // 1 period: screening)
- Suggested time frame (Conduct all 12 constructs at one time)
- Oral responses
- Pupils are allowed to repeat answering the construct (max 3 times)
- Teacher may do actions as long as the teacher does not make the sound of the letters.

ii) Writing

- 12 constructs/ questions
- Administered during lessons (1 period: lesson // 1 period: screening)
- Suggested time frame

- Written work
- Teacher provides minimal guidance.
- Teacher may use first language (Chinese, Malay) for instructions.
- Teacher may remind pupils to write full stop, capital letters, etc…
- Teacher may let advance students do the written screening on their own.

2. The manuals will be given to every teacher before screening. They are guides to help you carry out the
screening.

3. Conduct the screening during your English lessons. *Teachers cannot use two full periods (1 hour) to conduct
screening. Lessons should still go on as normal so, it is advised that you use 1 period (0.5 hr) for lesson and 1
period (0.5 hr) for screening. This means that in order to finish the screening, it will be stretched over a few
lessons.

4. Carry out screening during the given period of time. (Oral: 1 month // Writing: 2 weeks)

Scoring guide (Year 1-4)

1. Filled during (reading) / after (writing) screening instruments are administered.
