MODAL VERB 2 Modal verbs of certainty


We use modal verbs of certainty to make deduction or assumption, it means, to emit a judgment and
opinion about a situation in the present, these modal verbs are: must, can't, may, might and could.
These modal verbs are used according to the certainty about what we are saying:

Structure of modal verbs of certainty


When the deduction is about daily situations or the main verb is a state verb, it is written in infinitive, this
is the structure:

Nevertheless, we use the modal verbs of certainty with TO BE + …ING when we are talking about
temporary situation or situations that are happening at the moment of speaking.

We use CAN’T when we think that something is impossible

We use MUST when we have reasons or we are sure about something

May, might, could are used about situation in the present when the speaker is not sure about the
assumption he/she is talking about due to the lack of information

May, might, could are used about situation in the present when the speaker is not sure about the
assumption about the future
