Don’t Let Poor Safety

Habits Start a Fire A fire can break out anywhere, including where
you work. Fires in the workplace can cause property
damage, severe injuries, and sometimes, even death.
Here is important information to help you better
LOSS PREVENTION SAFETY LETTER protect yourself and others from a workplace fire.

Fire prevention tips

Your best defense against a fire is preventing one. Here are fire prevention safety tips to
follow:
• Smoke only in designated areas.
• Check and replace any electrical cords that have cracked insulation or broken connectors.
• Avoid plugging more than one extension cord into an outlet.

• Don’t run extension cords across the doorways or place them under mats or furniture.
• Leave adequate space around heat-producing equipment such as copy machines, printers,
and computers.
• Turn off and unplug electrical appliances with heating elements, such as coffee machines,
when they are not being used.
• Store flammable materials in approved safety containers or storage cabinets.
• Make sure all plugs are fully inserted into the outlet.

Fire response tips

If there is a fire in your workplace do the following:
• Sound the alarm and leave the area immediately, closing all doors behind you.
• Check any door before opening it. Stay low behind the door and feel the door with the
back of your hand for heat. If you feel heat on or around the door, use another escape route.
• If you must exit through smoke, stay low where there is less smoke by crawling on your
hands and knees.
• Once outside, go to the designated assembly area away from the fire.
• Ensure that the fire department has been called.
• Don’t reenter the area until the fire department representative says it is safe to do so.

P.A.S.S. the Fire A portable fire extinguisher can save lives
and property by putting out a small fire or

Extinguisher containing it until the fire department arrives.

If the fire is small and you have been trained
to use an extinguisher, grab the nearest
appropriate one and apply the following
LOSS PREVENTION SAFETY LETTER techniques:

Pull the pin. This unblocks the operating lever and allows you to discharge the extinguishing
agent. Some extinguishers may have a different lever-release mechanism.

Aim the extinguisher nozzle or hose low at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever above the handle. Squeeze the lever to discharge the extinguishing agent.
Releasing the lever stops the discharge. (Some extinguishers have a button instead of a lever.)
Note: The extinguisher must be serviced and refilled even after a partial discharge of the agent.

Sweep from side to side. Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire ensuring that you are
several feet away from it and carefully sweep back and forth until the flames are out. Watch the
fire area; if the fire reignites, repeat the process.

Remember, fire extinguishers are designed to put out SMALL fires!
