Director and inspiration
research

I am inspired by “The lazy song” by Bruno Mars and The music video directors are Cameron Duddy and Bruno Mars. Cameron Duddy
directs are majority of Bruno Mars music videos so they are familiar with working together and achieving identical creativity.
The music video uses monkeys and use a range of expressions and monkey behaviours which I find inspirational because it is relatable to
my project as I am using PG Tips monkeys so this is a good example from my point of view of a monkey.
This Music video was nominated for best chorography for 2011. from this music video I will use all monkey traits and will create my own
monkeymentry instead.

Inspiration continued

This a PG Tips advert displaying a PG Tips monkey and Johnny Vegas doing a comedy advert. This illustrated amination
by showing a PG Tips monkey carrying a bag of shopping, making and drinking a mug of PG Tips tea. This showcases
monkeys are intelligent as they can do the same things as a human. This advert also showcases what a PG Tips monkey
merchandise looks like so my target audience would expand as people who love PG Tips monkeys would appeal to this.

Voiceover inspiration

From this video I discovered that Sir David Attenborough has an unusual voice
which was distant, humorous and engaging so I felt this was a suitable style for my
project. I am using monkeys and Sir David has done wildlife programs so this is why
he has inspired me.

Legal and Ethical Research

Common creative licence applies to this project because it applies to audio what is
not royalty free. Generally the common creative licence covers for 35 seconds for
every none royalty free audio used.
Copyright because of original artists can claim this if there not contacted or follow
ccl and if ideas have been stolen. This would implicate legal implications such as
court costs, fines and fees to name a few.
Consent and release forms because performers can file lawsuits if this is not signed
creating problems once creations are uploaded.
Human rights act by looking after crew by covering the expensive, ensuring there
are not working for nothing following health needs and treat them right.
TARGET AUDIENCE
RESEARCH
These will be TV and film students all genders ranging from 16 + year old at
Nottingham College. To expand this I will be uploading this onto various platforms.
I asked questions on my survey using survey monkey regarding demographics to
help me identify this.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

This American psychologist discovered the hierarchy of needs which is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human
needs, frequently depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before individuals can attend to
needs higher up. Deficiency needs arise due to deprivation and are said to motivate people when they are unmet. Also, the motivation to fulfil such
needs will become stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the longer a person goes without food, the more hungry they will
become.
Maslow (1943) initially stated that individuals must satisfy lower level deficit needs before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs. However,
he later clarified that satisfaction of a needs is not an “all-or-none” phenomenon, admitting that his earlier statements may have given “the false
impression that a need must be satisfied 100 percent before the next need emerges” (1987, p. 69).
When a deficit need has been 'more or less' satisfied it will go away, and our activities become habitually directed towards meeting the next set of
needs that we have yet to satisfy. These then become our salient needs. However, growth needs continue to be felt and may even become stronger
once they have been engaged.
Not everyone will move through the hierarchy in a uni-directional manner but may move back and forth between the different types of needs

Historical research - Emile Cohl

I watched this short film by Emile Cohl called

Fantasmagorie. It is a noir film from 1908
using amine which is quite similar to what I will
creating by making the PG Tips monkeys doing
things by themselves. Fantasmangorie is the first
fully animated film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEAObel8yIE&version=3&hl=en%5FUS&rel=0
[Accessed 19 Apr 2019].
This shows the history of animation as it was introduced in the 19th centaury and
was primarily inspired by John Stuart Blackman. Cohl became successful by
creating more animated films which is inspiring as my film could be successful.

Puppetry

I watched this video because it would show me how to puppet with an object because I could
direct my cast and crew better. Instead of using a puppet I used a PG Tips monkey so I had to
practice this to make production smooth as possible to make out the monkey is doing this by
themselves in a realistic manner. This skill will be used for my PG Tips monkeys sliding by the
banisters, typing an essay using a computer and a love scene.

Green screen

For one of my scenes I will have to use the green screen area in the TV studios. I
will have use objects what are not have the colour green in because this look green
because it would not disappear. By using green this would been scene. Upon post
production I will have to use the
Ultra key to remove to the green and
apply a creative mp4 file background
to display movement.
Camera shots
Camera shots explanation

For my mockumentary I practiced various camera shots such as dutch tilt, tracking,
over the shoulder, wide, close up, extreme close up, pan, point of view, static, high
angle and mid shot so I could be creative. I was inspired by this blog
https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/ultimate-guide-to-camera-shots/ with
various shot types providing an example with a description it would help me
decide my creative options and must be fit for purpose.

Pram walking

To get used to walking pram I walked around various locations

Including to my local supermarket and walking around different
location so I could learn how to walk with a pram natural as
Possible so it looked smooth for production.
Primary research

I created a questionnaire to help me identify my target audience because this will assist me with my production. I distributed this on the creative
network and tv and film Facebook pages.

Here is the link to my questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/5DR2GKN

Questionnaire results
Analysis

Question one I discovered that 10 people answered this question – to be precise 4 females and 6 males making this
40% female and 60% male. This was a open question. Question two 10 people replied and 5 responses was under the
age category of 16 – 24 making this 50%, 2 people aged 25 – 33 making this 20%, 1 person aged 34 – 40 making 10%
and 2 people aged 41 – 50 making this 20% . This was an open question. Question three the majority of all responses
was students at 70% and this was a closed question. Question four 100% of responses liked nature and this was an
open question. Question five majority of responses liked PG Tips monkeys with 80% and this was a an open question.
Question six 100% of my responses loved mockumentaries with 40% and this was a open question. Question seven
50% of my responses like the genre of comedy and this was an open question. Question eight 100% of my responses
have heard of the platform YouTube and this was an open question . Question nine 44.44% of my responses thought
the duration should be between 3 – 4 minutes making this the majority and this was a closed question. Question ten
the majority of my responses thought that the mockumentary should have comedy and this was a closed question.
Questions 1- 3 was to identify demographics for my target audience and questions 3 – 10 was to identify my target
audiences requirements.
Using this information I will apply this to my production to met the requirements of the target audience .
Gallery research

I visited to the Cotemporary In Nottingham to see an exhibition relating to the this

project. I went all to rooms where I felt I would benefit this from to make this a
useful visit. It would conclude it was helpful because allowed me to think about
nature and audio.
How was this useful?
I found this useful because this has a
nature Mise-En-Scene and my project
has elements of nature in some
backgrounds such as trees and plants
which could possible be used to create
cinematography from the height of the
trees when the PG Tips monkeys are on
the bus through the window of the
pram area
How was this useful?
I found this useful because this has
nature audio which will assist me with
my sound design by using jungle and
nature sounds in my project edit by
using diabetic and non diabetic audio.
This was nature noises with rain and
birds twerking in the rainforest
Aftermath of the Contemporary

Following the visit I created my own

nature inspired image. I did this by
taking an image of one of my monkeys
and downloaded a nature picture for
the background. I used the skew toll
to rotate the monkey into the
position. To me this is a monkeys
habitat so this would be enjoy trees
and nature.

This eBook was helpful because it explained monkeys stress levels for both male and female
monkeys that will help explain some of the behaviours so I can use this information and
relate it to my PG Tips monkeys body language and behaviour during production.
From this book it highlighted information about natural conditions and how monkeys
react with their natural habit such as the Hanuman langurs using natural selection. A
case study of biases in taste aversion learning showed me the information that will
help for my introductory scenes my PG Tips monkeys are eating breakfast and are
outside in a rural location.
Also this book explained about the evolution of monkeys and I leant that monkeys can
do most things humans can such as sign language which displays communication skills,
eating, drinking, empathy and emotions.
I gathered more information about monkey behaviours in depth which will be used to
display during my project because each monkey has its unique characteristics and will
not be the same.
From this book I gathered information about interaction skills which will be used
during my project. These include eye contact and caring is sharing.

From the eye contact section I gathered that this will be useful for certain scenes
as my PG Tips monkeys will be interacting with humans by using either eyes up or
eyes down.

For caring is sharing is will be used for where Faye becomes a donor because she
gives Sidekick a bounty as a reward for producing a good essay.

Developmental research

David Attenborough is an English broadcaster who I would inspirational because of

his narratives of the program David Attenborough Wildlife Specials as this be fitting
for voiceovers for my mockumentary. David Attenborough Wildlife Specials was a
documentary program about wildlife from 1998 – 2002 on BBC1 and was a one off
series comprising of a few episodes.

Advanced filming

I will be using a canon d600 dlsr camera because this is a good quality for creative
productions. The camera has 2 modes – manual and automatic. Manual means
control by myself from white balance, aperture, lens focusing and shutter speed.
Automatic means this is done for you. I will be using a 18mm – 55mm lens because
this is smooth and veritable by modifying the lens size using the one lens. A tripod
is used for stability of shots and can be used creatively by using this open and
closed- closed allows you lift the tripod up and take shots high up creating a
monopod and open for any shots what are needed from a certain height on floor
level. Zoom microphones are used for noon diabetic audio such as dialogue and
voiceovers and always ensure optimal quality in the industry.
Cinematography

I will use natural lighting for my project because

it will be suitable to make my mockumentary
natural as possible because I will be using outdoor
locations and indoor locations. To create shadows
on the bus I will film when the weather is nice
so the sun will reflect using the trees to create the
patterns. To create the sun filter look I will create that
by producing in the sun where this appears to make
this look authentic.
Cinematography continued

Following this video I would have had to use a tripod, flash head with orange
gel over this to achieve my vision if the weather was not good during production.
The video showed I would had to use more crew and purchase the equipment
mention making this expensive but I would not have been restricted to when I can
film as I could even film on dull cloudy days but this trick created the illusion of
nice weather.

Editing

To create the monkeys moving I had to

modify the anchor points to allow this to
Move in a realistic manor. Images provide will
Show what I did to create this. I also used the
Ultra key to remove the green.
