Cooling system

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier4F

Coolant

 Ethylene Glycol based coolant must be used in Scania Engines.

 It must be Nitrite Free.
 Engine coolant must contain a minimum of 35% and a maximum
of 60% anti freeze when there is a risk of freezing.
 Only pour premixed coolant into the cooling system.
 Examples of approved Scania antifreeze: ASTM D3306 and 4985
 Antifreeze should never be mixed with a rust inhibitor.

Heat RejectionTier 4F

 DC 09 approx +20% increased heat to coolant

 DC 13/16 approx +25% increased heat to coolant
 This is at rated speed 2100rpm.

 Cooling capacity will not decrease as much at lower power output,

since the EGR rate will increse. Approx 70% of max power will still
demand approx 90% of max heat rejection to cooling water

 10% increased air flow and cooling requirement for CAC

 Increased max coolant temp from 105°C (221°F) to 114°C (237°F)

Draining Coolant

 Remove expansion tank cap.

 Drain the coolant at two locations:
Lowest point of the cylinder block
Lowest point of the cooling system
 Close the taps.

Coolant Fill
 Connect tool 99 301 to drain valve
 Make sure that the cooling system bleed
pipes are not blocked or damaged
 Open the expansion tank cap
 Fill with coolant to the maximum level of
the expansion tank.
 Disconnect hose
 Set heating control to maximum heat
and start the engine. Idle speed must
not exceed 600 rpm. Leave the engine
idling for 15 min.
 Stop the engine and top off coolant to
the maximum level in the expansion
tank.

Cleaning Cooling System 6,000 hours
 Run the engine until it has reached operating temperature and
drain the coolant.
 Remove the thermostats.
 Fill cooling system with clean hot water mixed with liquid
dishwasher detergent, concentration 1%.
 Run the engine until it has reached operating temperature
approximately 20- 30 minutes.
 Drain cooling system.
 Refill system with clean hot water and run the engine for 20-30
minutes.
 Drain water from system.
 Install thermostats.
 Fill the system with new coolant following the specification
under Coolants in the workshop manual.
