TOYOTA PRODUCTION SYSTEM (TPS)

Toyota production system (TPS) is a unique system of producing vehicles

developed by Toyota. the goal is to provide best quality, lowest cost, and shortest
lead time through the elimination of waste also known as “The Toyota Way”.

TPS was established on two concepts:

1. Just in Time
The just-in-time (JIT) inventory system is a management strategy that aligns raw
material orders from suppliers directly with production schedules. Companies use
this inventory strategy to increase efficiency and decrease waste by receiving
goods only as they need them for the production process, which
reduces inventory costs.
Ex- Toyota is famous for its implementation of a JIT inventory system. Toyota
orders parts only when it receives new orders from customers.

2. JIDOKA
Jidoka is one of the most important lean methods for ensuring build in quality.
Autonomation refers to “Automation with a human touch” If there is a problem
during auto assembly, anyone on the line has the power to stop production to
address the problem. Judoka highlights the causes of problems because work
stops immediately when a problem first occurs. This leads to improvements in the
processes that build in quality by eliminating the root causes of defects.

TPS results in a decrease of total elimination of:

1. Waste
2. Unnecessary components

For Toyota Customers TPS means:

1. Shorter lead time
2. Cost saving
