Aim : to show that heat causes liquids to expand and contract

Procedure:
1. First, the thermometer is used to measure the room temperature.
2. Next, the thermometer is put into a beaker containing hot water as
shown in figure 7.7 for 2 minute.
3. Finally, the thermometer is put into a beaker containing ice as
shown in figure 7.8 for 2 minute.
4. What happen is observed to the level of mercury in the
thermometer when I put the thermometer into the different beakers.

Result:

Room temperature (OC)


Hot water temperature
Ice temperature

Observation:
 when the water was heated, the level of the
mercury in the thermometer rose.
 When the water was allowed to cool, the level
of the mercury in the thermometer fell.
Conclusion:
A liquid expands when heated and contracts when
cooled.
