Activity : 7.6
Aim : To show that heat causes gasses to expand and
Contract.

Diagram :
Glass tube
Indicator
Rubber stopper

Round bottom flask

Air

Procedure:
1. The apparatus as shown in figure 7.9 is set up.
2. The round bottomed flask is covered with my palms and the
movement of the indicator is notes.
3. My palms are removed from the round bottomed flask and the
movement of the indicator in glass tube is noted.

Observation:
When the air in the flask was heated with palms,
the drop of coloured water fell and then rose.
When the air in the flask cooled down, the drop of
coloured water fell.

Conclusion:
Gas expands when heated and contracts when
cooled.

Discussion:
1. Suggest how a tightly fitted cap of a bottle can
be removed. Give a reason for your
suggestion.

Submerge the bottle cap in hot water for a

while. The bottle stopper ___expands____
when heated.

2. Why does the level of the drop of coloured

water fall and then rise again when you place
your palms on the flask?
Initially, the flask expands before the air
expands and this causes the level of the drop of
coloured water to fall. When the air in the flask is
heated, it expands and pushes the drop of coloured
water up the glass tube.

Observation:
1. what happen to the indicator in the glass tube when you cover
the round bottomed flask with your palms? Why?
The indicator in the glass tube is seen moving up when the
rounded flask is held by the warm hands.

2. what happen to the indicator in the glass tube when you remove
your palms from the round bottomed flask? Why?
The indicator in the glass tube is moving down when I removed
my palm from the rounded flask.

Conclusion:
What is your conclusion?
Gas expand when it is heated and contract when it is cooled.
