AIR MOVEMENTS

B Y: G R O U P 3
7 - LUNA
EXPERIMENT 1: AIR MOVEMENT

I. Objective: To explain air movement due to difference in temperature and pressure.

II. Materials: Candle, glass, match, tray and water
III. Procedure:
1. Pour water into the tray
2. Lit the candle and place it on the tray
3. Cover the lighted candle with the glass
4. Observe what will happen
V. Guide Questions
1. What happened to the flame of the candle when it was covered by the glass?
The flame of the candle went out when it was covered by the glass.
2. Compare the temperature inside and outside the glass.
The temperature inside the glass is lower after the flame goes out. While the temperature
outside is higher.
3. Compare the pressure inside and outside the glass.
There is a lower pressure inside the glass because when the flame goes out, the air in the
container cools and cooler air contracts or takes up less space. That contraction then creates a weak
vacuum. While outside the glass, there’s a higher pressure. This air pushes water into the container.
4. How will you describe the movement of water upon covering the candle?
Some of the water got sucked into the glass. The water starts collecting inside the glass and
absorbing it from the outside.

EXPERIMENT 2: AIR MOVEMENTS

I. Objective: To explain air movement due to difference in temperature and pressure

II. Materials: Bottle, beaker, balloon, hot water, and cold water
III. Procedure:
1. Place hot water and cold water in each beaker
2. Place the balloon on the mouth of the bottle
3. Put the bottle on the beaker with hot water.
Observe what will happen
4. Put the bottle on the beaker with cold water.
Observe what will happen
Cold Water

Hot water
V. Guide Questions
1. What happened to the balloon when placed in a beaker with hot water?
The balloon expanded slightly when we placed it in a beaker with hot water.
2. What happened to the balloon when placed with a beaker with cold water?
When we placed the balloon in a beaker with cold water, nothing happened. Unlike what
happened to the balloon when placed in a beaker with hot water, it did not expand.
3. Compare the pressure inside and outside the bottle.
When it is placed in a beaker with hot water, the inside of the bottle has higher pressure
because air in the bottle is heated up. The air molecules began to move faster and take up more
space. And the pressure outside is lower.
When placed in a beaker with cold water, the inside of the bottle has lower pressure and has
higher pressure outside. The cold water lowers the overall temperature of the air inside the bottle
and also lowers the pressure.
4. Explain your observation.
We observed that when the hot water heats up the air in the bottle, the balloon expands. And
when we put the bottle into the cold water, the air inside the bottle cools down and the balloon
shrinks.

VI. Generalization
We conclude that when something is heated, there is a higher pressure and causes the air to
expand and rise. And when the air cools down, it contracts and needs less space thus has lower
pressure
