UNICEF urges gov't to pass 'anti-palo' law
The United Nations children's agency UNICEF on Friday urged President Rodrigo
Duterte to sign into law a measure that prohibits beating children and other physical
forms of punishment to discipline them.
Malacañang on Thursday confirmed that Duterte rejected the measure, saying that the
President believes parents can physically punish their children in a "self-restrained"
manner.
Duterte also believes that corporal punishment remains as an "effective form of
discipline" that is also "uniquely Filipino," Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo
said.
In a statement, UNICEF emphasized that the bill does not impede parents' right to
discipline their child but "seeks to promote positive discipline instead of corporal
punishment."
Three in 5 Filipinos experienced physical violence during childhood, with more than half
of the cases happened at home, UNICEF said, citing the 2015 National Baseline Study
on Violence against Children.
An ideal home is where positive discipline is practiced, the group added, citing a 2016
report by the Council for the Welfare of Children.
"We call on the Government to uphold its responsibility to respect, protect, and
fulfill children’s rights and to support all measures that support families," UNICEF
said. (iacting)

FEU topples shorthanded UST for 2nd win
Far Eastern University recovered from its previous loss, bouncing back at the expense
of University of Santo Tomas, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 27-25, in the UAAP Season 81
women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
FEU saw its 24-21 lead crumble when UST took a 25-24 lead after Eya Laure’s efforts
Dimdim Pacres, however, sent her service straight to the net to seal the Lady
Tamaraws win.
FEU head coach George Pascua said he had to remind his players on what they’ve
been doing right and let out that killer instinct that was absent in the Lady Tamaraws’
five-set loss to Ateneo wherein they squandered a two-set lead.
“We’ve had experiences wherein we were leading by two sets and come the fourth and
fifth set we will give in,” said Pascua in Filipino. “I told them that they should always be
sharp in the crucial sets because those are the scenarios where they will mature.”
A scary moment happened to UST late in the second set when Season 80 Rookie of the
Year Milena Alessandrini injured her left knee after a bad landing.
Cherry Rondina then suffered cramps in the fourth set allowing FEU to push the Golden
Tigresses to the limit.
Celine Domingo finished with 17 points for the Lady Tamaraws while Heather Guino-o
and rookie Lycha Ebon had 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Laure had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Tigresses while Rondina finished the
match with 16.

US vows PH defense vs. attack in South China Sea
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday said the United States would defend the
Philippines against any “armed attack” in the South China Sea and was committed to
ensuring that China “does not pose a threat” that could close the strategic waterway.
Speaking during a stopover in Manila after the US-North Korea summit in Vietnam,
Pompeo said the United States would fulfill its obligations under the 1951 Philippine-US
Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) if the Philippines fell victim to aggression and singled out
China as a threat to stability.
“China’s island-building and military activities in the South China Sea threaten your
sovereignty, your security and therefore economic livelihood as well as that of the
United States,” he said during a joint press conference with Foreign Secretary Teddy
Locsin Jr.

Maroon 5 vocalist to Pinoy contestant: "You're a better singer than all
of us."
A Pinoy contestant, Jej Vinson became a four-chair turner when he auditioned for The
Voice U.S.
He impressed coaches and judges Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and
Blake Shelton on the Blind Auditions last March 4.

On the first eight seconds of singing Drake’s “Passionfruit”, American Idol Season 1
winner, Kelly Clarkson says, "He’s good.”

Not long after, Blake Shelton smashed the buzzer. On which Kelly followed thereafter in
full excitement to see Jej’s face. While the last to turn were John Legend and, Maroon 5
frontman, Adam Levine who agreed upon Kelly’s previous comment.

Jej’s majestic performance made Shelton stand from his chair and Clarkson come
towards him to shake his hands. This is where Adam says that Jej is a better singer
than the four of them. To which Jej replies with: “That’s not true!”

22-year-old Filipino based in Los Angeles jumped in happiness as he can’t believe what
just happened.
Jej Vinson originates from Davao City who later migrated to U.S. at the age of 15 along
with his parents.

He came from a traditional family and first sang on a karaoke back when he was very
young after witnessing his parents sing in a choir.

When he was 18, they transferred to California where he studied music at University of
Southern California (USC) and became the music director of the university’s a cappella
group.

Jej also worked part-time at a restaurant while studying.

BREAKING NEWS: TWO MOTORCYCLES CAUGHT FIRE AFTER
COLLISION
Huge flames engulfed two motorcycles in Zamboanga Sibugay. The fire broke out after
the two bikes crashed head on along a national highway in Buug town. Police say one
of the riders failed to notice an incoming bike after it tried to make a left turn. The
motorcycles caught fire from a container of gasoline carried by one of the passengers.
Two people which includes a teacher suffered burns and injuries. Residence
immediately rushed the victims to a local hospital. The motorcycles involved were
heavily damaged.
We contacted a witness via a social messaging app saying:
I was just passing by when the two motorcycles were already on fire. If only there was
no gasoline, the victims could’ve received only minor injuries. The police and fire station
were contacted however the mobile phone signal was cut offed at that time for the local
holiday events. In my estimation, this might have happened at about 4:30 in the
afternoon since I was late to come at the scene. What I know is they were rushed to St.
John, the nearest hospital then they were brought to Zamboanga City. Some say one of
them died upon arrival. After that, I have no further details anymore.
