FLASHCARDS

DEFINITION:

Flashcards are a series of cards can be prepared on a single topic, put in logical order,
before starting the explanation.

PURPOSES OF FLASH CARDS:

 To develop the power of observation, identification, quick comprehension and


retention of particular topic.
 Help to develop the cognitive abilities and recognition and recall about the topic.
 Provide students with a systematic approach to drill.
 Pictorial contents presented in a series are easily recognized by the group.
 Communication of new ideas requires repetitive study methods, drill-work and
review of the discussion that can be achieved through flashcards.

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING FLASHCARDS:

 Preparation
 Coloring
 Illustrations
 Writing

Preparation:

 Collect information and select the essential points


 Sort them, in logical sequence.
 Put one idea on one card by making a rough layout on ordinary paper

Coloring;

 Color creates interest in the human mind.


 Select colors to fit the background to provide good contrast.
 Do not use too many colors.

Illustration:

 Each card should contain the highlights of the topic in the form of pictures,
illustrations, diagrams, drawings, cartoons etc.,
 The illustrations should be simple and easily understandable.
 It should be large enough for everyone to see.
 It should be adapted to local condition.

Writing:

 Flashcards should never have few or no writings.


 It is always better to use capital letters.
 Use capital letters of 5 cm length for better visualization.
 It is better to limit the caption to five or six words
 Write the talking points in the back of the card on the right hand corner
 For the first card, write the talking points on the last one, for the second one, on the
back of the first. Repeat until whole series is finished.

GUIDELINES FOR USING FLASHCARDS:

 Rehearse the presentation several times before trying on the audience.


 Do not allow anyone to sit more than 20 feet away.
 Arrange the cards logically and sequentially
 Hold the cards at chest level where people can see clearly; hold against the body and
not in air.
 Turn to different angles so that everyone can see clearly.
 Explain the first card with the aid of the talking points written on the back of the last
card.
 Slip no 1 card behind the stack flashing no 2 and explain no 2 with the aid of the
points written on the back of the no.1. repeat until the whole series is finished.
 When larger cards are used, card may be slipped behind the set or remove it and
place it face down on a nearby table.
 Use local terminology and simple words.
 Use pointer and Don’t cover that matter with hand.
 Be enthusiastic and enjoy explaining the matter.
 Be a good showman. Do not be clumsy while showing the cards.
 Stress important points and involve the audience too.
 If necessary present it again.
 Summarize the main points at the end.
 Pass the whole stack of cards to audience to view it.
 Invite questions and answer to them.
