Lesson Idea Name: Adding and Subtracting

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value,
properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Technology Standard Addressed:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson can be available on all learning devices. Once the students have answered the question, it shows
them the correct answer without displaying names. Therefore, encouraging full participation from all
students. This activity can be played individually or played as a team, and it gives all students an opportunity
to demonstrate their knowledge.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to this SRT activity, students will already have an understanding of addition and subtraction problems.
This activity will be introduced when students have shown enough knowledge on the subject, that an
interactive quiz will highlight that, and what the students need more help on. Once the teacher instructs
everyone to get a learning device, they will be asked to log in when everyone is ready with the teacher code.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the interactive quiz, each student will have their own device because this activity will not be a team

activity. The teacher will then set up the Kahoot activity on the interactive white board as the students set
their devices up. Once all the students are ready, the teacher will start the first question and continue on until
the whole quiz is completed. After each question, the students and the teacher will be able to see which
questions are being missed the most. The teacher should take notes of those questions, and plan to review
those questions further with the students.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
I provided my Kahoot example on my Weebly page.
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes, I have pre-selected the correct answers in this activity so students will instantly know their results.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the students have completed the interactive quiz, the teacher should look over the notes that were
taken during the quiz. Then, plan a review lesson over those questions and create other activities that
correlate to the subject so students receive more practice.

How will the data be used?

This data will be used to identify which math problems the students are struggling with the most. It is being
used as an assessment so the teacher can see what content needs to be reviewed and explained more. The
students will not be graded on this interactive quiz because it is only meant as a quick assessment. This
interactive quiz is designed for students to participate in an interactive game that tests their knowledge, but
while staying engaged.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

In this activity, I am working with students on addition and subtraction problems from memory because it is a
fast-paced quiz. Whereas, on a regular quiz students have more time to think about their answers, or think of
other things and get distracted. The learning goal in this activity is to determine if the students know the
addition and subtraction problems.
Reflective Practice:
I believe that students will definitely enjoy this activity, and it helps the teacher determine whether they are
ready to move on to the next lesson or not. This activity should be used as a fun way to engage students in
math problems, and quickly test their knowledge on addition and subtraction problems.
