CHAPLAIN’S REPORT
by Tom Fortenberry
COMING HOME
Ask any Southerner and they will quickly confess there ain’t
many days in the summer that are not hot and all of them are
humid. In fact it is so humid year round that it feels like the whole
ocean left the beach and washed up, or should I say rained down
on one’s face. One of my brothers who lives in yankee land,
Cincinnati, often comes down to see us and he always complains
about the hot weather and humidity down here. He does not stay
long, and by the way he lives on the Southern side of the Ohio
River in Kentucky. Southern life is unlike any other.
Personally, I enjoy getting out and exploring the back roads and
places I have passed on the interstate. I recall one late summer
years ago, I decide to take a back road just to see where it would
lead. This was something I had done a number of times during my
travels across the state and so thought nothing of turning off the
main roads. Somewhere in Southwest Mississippi I believe in
Adams County or maybe Franklin, I took a side road just to see
where it would lead. To my surprise it was not long after leaving
the main four lane highway that the black top road I was on turned
to gravel and then to dirt and last on to a cow trail. Just for
thought, a cow trail never follows a straight path to the barn.
About this time my mind started to realize the fact that, maybe I
was really sure fired lost and about to end up at the end of the trail
in the woods miles from who knows where. With plenty of fuel in
my truck and water beside me I pressed on. Soon about half an
hour later with relief, the cow trail ended with no barn or any
other structure in sight. The dirt road turned to gravel again and
then to black top. Relieved to find civilization again, even though
I still did not know where I was, I soon came out on to the same
four lane highway I had left miles behind or, so I thought. It is
truly amazing how God is able to bring us home when we are lost.
I still travel the back roads often, just to discover what can be
found around the bend. I encourage you to also turn off the main
road sometimes to see for yourselves what can be found.
Southern life is and will never be truly understood until one turns
off the highways and loses themselves in the land. After the War
of Aggression many Southern men traveled home back to their
families and friends. And sadly many died on the road. Today as
then, we are saddened and yet remember their sacrifices that
stand as a witness to their belief and cause. Whether they are far
away or near, they are truly home in our hearts to know that in
Dixie land where I still stand, God will surely bring you home.
We have enjoyed this year so far and have so many more things to look forward to in the future, and as always we are here to honor our Confederate
Ancestors, and shine a positive light on our two organizations in the community.

"Let each heart grow strong in the remembrance of our glorious past." –Robert E. Lee
Had a good crowd at our new meeting place, Fernando's, Hwy. 471, Brandon MS. Fifty eight people signed in for the meeting.
Commander Cupit called the meeting to order. Pam Mauldin gave an interesting talk on her research on the Beck Cemetery in
Salem MS, resulting in pin pointing the burial spots of members of Nathan Bedford Forrest family.
Cheryl Bruce from Wounded Warriors Mississippi was presented a check for $1000,00. This money was raised from the sale of
raffle tickets on various items at the Civil War relic show. Past donations have gone toward remolding bathrooms and air
conditioner units.
Frank Perry picked up a United States Flag/Mississippi silhouette wall hanging he won from the relic show raffle. He also talked
about how impressed he was with the show.
The minutes from June's meeting was approved, and reports given. Tim gave a report on the MS Division reunion, and Civil War
Relic Show. He stated he has pre sold 180 tables for next year's show.
OCR and Dedication of Thomas O. McDonald reports were given. A check for $1400.00 was presented to the OCR for the tea
registration fees.
Frank Ainsworth, Gary Smith, Curtis Brewer, and Daniel Doss were voted into Camp 265. Welcome men.
The VA Hospital in Jackson is trying to get a MIA chair. The camp voted to go in half ($200.00 each) with the OCR to purchase
the chair. A plaque will be placed on the chair stating our OCR chapter and SCV camp donated the chair.
Last but not least Gabriel Nokes was presented the AR-15, the grand prize from the Division reunion. I can truly say, he was one
happy young man.
The National SCV Reunion was held in Mobile, Alabama on July 11th, 12th, and 13th. Charles Lewis and Larry Eubanks served
as delegates for Camp 265. Raymond Shores assisted the Kennedy Brothers in their "Make Dixie Great Again" presentations.
Through the month of August, on a weekly basis, several SCV promotional videos will be released on the "Make Dixie Great
Again" social media. Be sure to look for the videos as one of our camp members is featured in one of them. Like and share, so we
can get the message out to as many people as possible. Camp member, Jonas Patrick received a Meritorious Service Certificate
and medal.
Then on July 20th OCR and SCV members met at Spinners in Florence for an evening of bowling, skating, and fun. All was going
well until Chris Merck fell and broke his leg. Get well soon, Chris.
