PK Reflection

PK is a 2014 Indian movie focusing on the story of an alien stranded on planet Earth, after an
unfortunate event where his spaceship’s remote control got stolen. The movie’s main character, whom
at first did not have a name, was from an advanced race that communicates with telepathy. He ended
up adapting to the name PK. This was just the start of his journey, the rest of the movie focuses on his
hunt in finding his remote control. He struggled with a lot of problem from looking for sources of food,
clothing, and even being misunderstood by people.

When people did not understand him, they ended up telling him to ask God for help. That’s the time he
started to question “who is God?” He ended up following traditions from multiple religions, which made
him more confused. He kept on asking God for help, since this was what he realized humans were doing.

He then met Jaggu, a heartbroken Indian woman who is now a TV reporter. PK told Jaggu everything
about him. He told her that he is a researcher from another planet, and that his people know nothing
about dressing, verbal communication, and religion. He even told her that he learned to talk after
holding a woman’s hand, and that he learned to fit in with humans by wearing clothes and using money
stolen from “dancing cars”. Jaggu thought PK was crazy at first, but PK had proven himself to Jaggu. PK
also told Jaggu that Tapasvi, a godman, has his remote control.

This was the time Jaggu promised PK that she would help him get his remote control back. PK thought
that maybe the reason why God is not granting his wish is because maybe he called God in a “wrong
number”, and that if they want all of their wishes granted, they must find the “right number”. This was
when the “wrong number” campaign started. They got Tapasvi and the people’s attention which led
Tapasvi to confront PK on air. Tapasvi asked PK what the “right number” could be. PK answered in telling
him that “God created us all” and the other duplicate Gods are only artificial, so if we want to be able to
communicate with God, we must only follow him and only him. At last PK got his remote control back,
and was able to go back home.

In my personal opinion, the movie focuses on many topics, but one topic is obviously dominant, and
that is the topic about religion. PK was able to teach me that one source of humans misunderstandings
is our diverse beliefs in religion. Every religion has different traditions and beliefs, causing us to
misunderstand and fight each other. The movie is not an attack in religion, but is rather a reminder for
humankind’s attitude and behavior. That even in the middle of our differences, we must be able to
accept each other’s opinions. We may have different religions in which we follow, but we are all humans
after all. Respect and understanding is the key factor for us to better accept each other. PK for me is one
amazing and a well-made movie.
