In the past, knowledge was stored on books.

Now, knowledge is stored in the

Internet. Do you think its advantages outweigh disadvantages?
Opinions are divided on whether storing knowledge on the internet is beneficial or harmful. While the
disadvantages of this method are clear, I believe that they are outweighed by its benefits.

The drawbacks of the shift towards storing knowledge on the internet are indeed in plain sight. Firstly, e-
readers are now more prone to eye strain than ever, given that we all too often spend long hours in
front of our computer or on our phone working or studying. Secondly, those who do not have the
internet connection as well as owning a computer or a smartphone cannot gain access to the areas of
knowledge they want to study. This means that, if knowledge were no longer stored on books, certain
parts of the population would be excluded from the pursuit of knowledge.

However, the positive ramifications of preserving knowledge online are far more significant. This
knowledge preservation method would probably lead to the exclusion of physical books, which will have
a positive knock-on effect on the environment. This is because trees, which can produce oxygen, absorb
carbon dioxide and stabilize the earth’s temperatures, would no longer need to be cut down to make
papers. A corresponding effect would be that the amount of waste produced from making papers would
be minimized. In other words, storing knowledge on the internet can assist humans in preserving the
environment and battling climate change.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the disadvantages of the trend towards storing knowledge on the
internet, I believe that the long term benefits of this development are desirable and therefore could
negate any possible negative outcomes.
