Hello Students and Parents,

Welcome back to school! Here is the Physical Education and ( Health 6th-8th grades.) Syllabus. Please read all the information and return the
signed portion back to your P.E. teacher. Have a wonderful school year!!

Course Description:​ This course will be comprised of Physical Education activities that allow students to understand the function of the body,
learn to measure their own performance more accurately, and develop plans for improvement. Students will be able to engage in a variety of
physical activities that will increase the body’s range of motion, strength, flexibility, and movement components. Students will increase their
awareness of the importance of exercise. Students in grades 6th-8th will have varying health lessons that cover topics such as; cardiovascular
health, body systems, nutrition, hygiene, and others as outlined in TEKS.

Objectives: ​The goal of the Physical Education Program at SST Discovery is to encourage students to develop positive attitudes about physical
activity and healthy lifestyles so that they may choose to remain physically active throughout their lives. Another goal is to help children develop
movement competence to enable them to participate in physical activity successfully.

Dress Code:

Grades K-5:

A. Students are expected to wear ​athletic shoe​s ​in Physical Education. These shoes should have scuff-proof soles. Flip flops, cleated
shoes, shoes with rollers, cowboy boots, or crocs will not be allowed.
B. If your child does not want to wear athletic shoes to school, please send them in their backpack.
C. Girls should wear shorts under dresses or skirts. Please help your child be responsible. Children will not be allowed to participate
without proper attire.
D. Failure to wear the appropriate attire will result in a lower participation grade.

Grades 6​th​-8​th​:

A. ​ALL 6​th​-8​th​ GRADERS ARE ​REQUIRED​ TO DRESS OUT FOR P.E.

B. ​Each student is required to comply with the school dress code regulations. Refer to the student handbook for dress code requirements.

➢ GRAY SHIRT (no sleeveless, tank top, or v neck shirts)


➢ BLACK SHORTS ( shorts must be below the knee) or grey sweatpants (no joggers, yoga pants, or tight fitting clothing)
➢ Athletic Shoes ONLY​! (sandals, boots, or non athletic shoes will result in your child not participating in PE.)
➢ Uniforms may be purchased from retail stores

Regulations and Procedures:

1. ALL SCHOOL RULES​ as stated in the ​STUDENT HANDBOOK, PHYSICAL EDUCATION RULES, AND GYM RULES
apply to all PE students.
2. Physical Education Discipline Policies-If student is unable to participate or does not dress out, the student will be required to do article
summaries or complete provided worksheets in order to gain participation points. DPS points will be issued when an infraction
occurs. For recurring infractions regarding proper dress procedures and participation, teacher will contact the parents.
3. Students will receive a deduction from their grade for improperly dressing out, and for not participating in the activity for the day.
4. Students are to stay with their class at all times.
5. No eating or Drinking ​in the changing rooms or inside the gym areas during class time. Obey gym rules at all times.
6. Deodorant, bottled water, and small towel ​are recommended for all students. Students may be released 8 minutes before the end of
class to take care of personal hygiene. ​Students must bring their own bottle water, hand towel, and deodorant. If possible please
refrain from buying spray deodorant with heavy scents (axe body spray for example).
7. All students must be at their assigned areas before their teacher dismisses them.
8. Faculty and Staff will not be held responsible for lost or stolen articles. ​Leave your valuables at home.
9. Students not dressing out are not allowed in the changing room Students are to carry their bags to the area where their class is meeting.
10. No backpacks allowed. All P.E. uniform should be carried in plastic grocery bag sack or drawstring bag.
11. UNEXCUSED TARDINESS​ will not be tolerated. If you are released late from your previous class, be sure to get a tardy slip from
your teacher.
12. Students with a ​PARENT​ note or ​DOCTOR ​note will be excused from participation but must complete alternate activity to receive
their participation points.
13. Student will be referred directly to the ​office​ when ​safety​ is involved or when conduct is severe. Cursing, defiance, and physical harm
to others will result in such action.

Guidelines for Working with a group

1. Respect everyone’s feelings


2. Use each other’s strengths, not weaknesses
3. Be a part of a group in some way
4. Give positive feedback when someone does well
5. Compete to improve your group, not necessarily against other groups
6. Safety—always spot when someone is not touching the floor
7. Anticipate unsafe situations
8. Try everyone’s suggestions and then formulate try what will best fit your group

Conflict Resolution Procedures

Paper/Rock/ Scissors for the following situations:

1. To see who gets the ball first at the beginning of the game/match
2. If the game is a tie and a team needs to move to the next court
3. To decide who wears the pennies Disagreements in interpretation of the rules to the game
4. Other situations needing a decision

​You Can Earn Points in P.E. Class If You . . .


1. Attend class each day.
2. Arrive on time to class and are sitting on your gym or class spot ready to learn.
3. Participate in all activities the first time that you are asked.
4. Display respectful behavior towards teacher and other students.
5. Use appropriate language when speaking with teacher and other students.
6. Return homework when it is assigned.
7. Are meeting or exceeding the SST School Expectations?
​You Will Lose Points in P.E. If You . . .
1. Have an unexcused absence.
2. Are tardy to class without a pass.
3. Show poor effort during the class period or if the teacher has to remind you to get moving or participate more than once.
4. Are disrespectful towards the teachers and/or classmates.
5. Do not return assigned homework.
6. Are not meeting the SST School Expectations.
