HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER

ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CIRCUITS

ENGR. MARY GRACE V. INIEGO, ECE
INSTRUCTOR I
RECTIFICATION

 RECTIFICATION
 It is the conversion of alternating current (AC) to
Direct Current (DC)

This almost always involves the use of some device

that only allows one-way flow of electrons. As we
have seen, this is what a semiconductor diode
does.

HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER

 Half-wave rectification
Process of removing the half-cycle of the input
signal.
A diode is connected to an AC source which
provides the input voltage VINPUT and to a load
resistor RLOAD.

HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER

 Over one full-cycle of the VINPUT, defined by the period T, the

average value (VDC) is zero.

 The circuit of the half-wave rectifier will generate a

waveform VOUTPUT that will have an average value (VDC) of
particular use in the AC-to-DC conversion.

HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER

 During the positive alteration of the 60 Hz input voltage, the output

voltage looks like the positive half of the input voltage.
 The diode is forward biased and conducts current through the
resistor.

HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER

 During the negative alteration of the input voltage, the current

is zero so the output voltage is also zero.
 During this cycle, the diode is reverse-biased that makes the
current equal to zero.

Effect of Barrier Potential on the Half-
Wave Rectifier Output

 During the positive half-cycle, the input voltage must

overcome the barrier potential before the diode becomes
forward biased.
 This results in a half-wave output with a peak value that is
0.7 less than the peak value of the input.

Average Value of the Half-Wave
Output Voltage

 The average value of the half-wave

rectified output voltage is the value
you would measure in a DC voltmeter.
 Mathematically, it is determined by
finding the area under the curve over
a full cycle, and then dividing by 2pi
(number of radians in a full cycle)

PEAK INVERSE VOLTAGE

 The PEAK INVERSE VOLTAGE (PIV) or the PEAK REVERSE

VOLTAGE (PRV) rating of the diode is of primary
importance in the design of the rectification systems.

 Recall that the PIV or PRV is the voltage rating that must
not be exceeded in the reverse-bias region or the diode
will enter the breakdown region.

Electronic Devices and Circuits - Engr. MGV Iniego 9/20/2017

PEAK INVERSE VOLTAGE

 The PIV Rating of the

diode must equal or
exceed the peak
value of the applied
voltage.
