RETROFIT DESIGN OF MASONRY

BUILDING (ANCHORAGE DESIGN)

Organized By:
National Society For Earthquake
Technology- Nepal (NSET)

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Objectives

Upon Completion of this session, the participants will

be able to:
➢ Anchorage (Bond) design of concrete jacketing
with masonry wall

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Bond Stress

➢ For RC Bandage/Jacketing and masonry walls to

work together as integral part, the bond at the
interface between these must be strong enough
➢ The bond stress should be less than the shear
stress resisting capacity between masonry wall and
bandage/ jacketing

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Induced Bond force

Bond force is calculated as follows:

F bd  f s Ast
where ,
fs=Tensile strength of steel
reinforcing bars = 0.56*fy
Ast =Area of reinforcing bars along
the bandage/ jacketing

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Bond Capacity

The bond stress is resisted by the bond strength of

concrete/plaster in splint/bandage/jacketing and the additional
through GI wire and steel rod anchorages

Fbd capacity = Fs +Fa

where,

Fs =Bond strength of concrete/plaster in

splint/bandage/jacketing ( Can be determined from test)

Fa = shear strength of GI wire and steel rod anchorages

horizontal band

Ast = (1 X 17.7 + 2 X 78.5) = 174.7 mm2

As per WSD, (IS 456)

fs = 0.56 X 415 = 232.4 N/mm2

Bond Force, Fbd = fs*Ast = 40600.3 N

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Design for Bandage Anchor
Fbd capacity = Fs +Fa
• Neglecting the bond strength contributed by plaster/
concrete jacketing for safe design of anchorage
• Using 2- 3.25 mm diameter GI wire for anchorage each
having shear area = 16.59 mm2
• Allowable shear stress of GI wire= 0.4*fy = 0.4*250= 100
N/mm2
• Shear resistance of GI wires= 16.59*100 = 1659 N
• Number of anchor per band = 40601/1659 = 24.5 ≈ 25
numbers
• 7Spacing= 7550/24= 315=300 mm

Anchorage detail

It is suggested to use alternate 2nos of GI wire of

3.25mm diameter (through wall) and 4.75 mm rebar
(half anchored in wall) at spacing of 300 mm in
staggered pattern.

Shear Capacity of Reinforced
Masonry wall
Shear capacity of the masonry wall reinforced with
vertical and horizontal reinforcing steels calculated as

F v  F vm  F vh  F vv
follows:
where,
Fvm = Shear strength of unreinforced masonry
Fvh = Shear resistance due to horizontal bars
Fvv = Shear resistance due to vertical bars
14

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Shear strength of
Unreinforced Masonry
➢ Shear stress of the unreinforced can be
determined using code or in-situ shear test.
➢ Shear strength is then calculated by multiplying
the shear stress with the cross sectional area of
the wall.
F vm  f vm A

15

Shear resistance due
to horizontal bars
Shear resistance due to horizontal bars is calculated
as follows:
where ,
F vh   n T b
n = number of horizontal reinforcing bars
Tb = Tensile strength of one bar
Note: Summation is done for different diameters of bars
that are provided along the whole height of the wall

16

Earthquake Safe Communities in Nepal

Shear resistance due
to vertical bars
➢ Shear is resisted by the vertical steel bars by dowel
action (Ref. Tomazevic):
F vv  0.806nd f c f s

where,
n= number of vertical reinforcing bars
d= diameter of the reinforcing bar
fc= allowable compressive strength of the embedding
mortar or grout
fs = allowable tensile stress in reinforcing bar

Design for Shear Resistance

The Shear capacity of the wall/ pier should be

greater than the shear force induced in the wall/ pier,
i.e.
F v  F vi
Where, Fvi = Shear force induced in wall/ pier
F v  F vm  F vh  F vv
