Find the ratio of the major axis to the minor

axis of the ellipse:
9x2 + 4y2 – 24y – 72x – 144 = 0
#11 Answer

1.5
Solution:
9x2 + 4y2 – 24y – 72x = 144
9(x2 – 8x + 16) + 4(y2 – 6y +9) = 144 + 9(16) + 4(9)
9(x - 4)2 + 4(y - 3)2 = 324
(x - 4)2 (y - 3)2
+ = 1 therefore: a = 9; b = 6
36 81
Major axis 2a 2(9)
RATIO = = = 2(6) = 1.5
Minor axis 2b

the sum of the parent’s ages is four times
the sum of their children’s ages. In fifteen
years, the sum of the parent’s ages will be
equal to the sum of their children’s ages.
How many children were in the family?
#5 Answer

5
Solution:
Let x = number of children in the family
y = sum of parent’s ages
z = sum of children’s ages
(1) y=2z Substitute y = 2z
y-5(2) = 4(z-5x) 2z – 10 = 4z – 20x
y-10 = 4z – 20x 20x – 10 = 2z
#5 Answer

Solution:
y + 15(2) = z + 15x
y + 30 = z +15x
Substitute z = 10x – 5
Substitute y = 2z (10x – 5) +30 = 15x
2z + 30 = z + 15x 25 = 5x
z + 30 = 15x x=5

A tour bus has 80 seats. Experience shows

that when a tour costs P28,000, all seats
on the bus will be sold. For each additional
P1,000 charged, however, 2 fewer seats
will be sold. Find the largest possible
revenue.
#9 Answer

P28,900.00
Solution:
Original cost per seat = 28, 000 / 80 = P350
Additional cost per seat due to P1,000 increase: 1000/80 = 12.5
Let x = additional charges (in thousands of pesos)
Additional cost per seat = 12.5x
Cost per seat = 350 + 12.5x
Number of seats sold = 80 – 2x
Revenue, R = cost per seat x number of seats sold
#9 Answer

P28,900.00
Solution:
R = (350+12.5x) (80-2x) For Maximum Revenue:
R= 28,000 + 300x - 25x2 Cost per seat = 350 + 12.5(6) = P425
dR Number of seats sold = 80 – 2(6) = 68
= 300 – 50x = 0
dx Max R = P425 (68) = P28,900
x=6
