GUNUNG PAYUNG BEACH

History
The name of Gunung Payung Beach was created from the name of the temple (Pura) at the hill right
above the beach, where it’s located at the hilly barren area and look like an umbrella so it’s called as
Pura Dang Kahyangan Gunung Payung. Which “Gunung” means the hill and Payung means the thing of
the hill look alike. The origin of its pura was started from the spiritual journey by Dang Hyang Dwijendra
which came to Bali after the civil war on Majapahit kingdom. Majapahit Kingdom was defeated by
Demak Kingdom, and he was one of the Hindus who won’t to join moslem. They choose to escape by
stayed in several region such as Bromo, Semeru, Kelud, Blambangan, Pasuruan, and Bali.

Few of sanctuary built by Dang Hyang Dwijendra called as Pura Dang Kahyangan, their are Pura Rambut
Siwi, Pura Melanting, Pura Er Jeruk, Pura Petitenget, and Pura Gunung Payung.

This Pura become the beginning of Dang Hyang Dwijendra’s journey to Pura Luhur Uluwatu. When Dang
Hyang Dwijendra did the spiritual journey, and arrived at Kutuh’s village area, he amazed with the
location because it’s radiate a strong spiritual power. So he decided to built the Pura at that location.

Location and Access

Gunung Payung Beach is located in Adat Kutuh Village, South Kuta District, Badung Regency. It takes 15
minutes to reach the beach from Nusa Dua, if you are in Ngurah Rai Airport will takes 20 minutes and it
will spend about an hour from Denpasar by car and no traffic jam.

In the entrance, you’ll get additional charge of Rp. 5.000 for car, Rp. 2.000 for motorbike and Rp. 4.000
per person. Then you can continue driving until you find the Pura Dhang Kahyang Gunung Payung. In
front of the Pura, you’ll find the parking lot and near that you’ll find the toilet. To access the beach, we
have to pass through about 450 stairs and spend about 20 minutes to climb down the stairs.

What to see, what we can enjoy and why we should go there


We will feel the adventure start from entry the stairs and try to climb down of it for getting into the
beach, on the expedition we will see the beautiful with blue view of the ocean from up of the hill.

The scenery is very natural, the cliff around the beach isolate it so that the place become
hidden, this beach is a very quiet place to relax and it’s far from the crowded place like in
the city, Gunung Payung beach has a white sands with a soft texture and a crystal clear
sea water with blue and green gradation colour on it.
There are many activities that we can do in this beach, such as snorkelling or camping.
This beach is a perfect place to swim, there are a huge cave for chilling on the seaside
by listening to the music, reading, sunbathing and many more.
Then we can enjoy a beautiful sunset, visitors doing paragliding activities, fishing
(sometimes), it also can be an ideal destination for the photographer because of its
amazing scenery.
The wave is great for surfing, and the most important things to watch is the piodalan
anniversary on the temple every full moon on the eighth month of the Balinese pawukon calendar
(coinciding January or February on the Gregorian calendar), because it has a deep meaning and a
cultural side of Bali.
