Tutorial Sheet 6

Problems: Last Date of submission: 13th September 2019.

Instruction: Assume appropriate missing data if any.
1. Figure 1 shown below is the output waveform of a HWR with a capacitor filter. The value of
capacitor is 1000µF and the value of load resistance is 100Ω with the frequency of input
voltage equal to 50Hz. Determine the ripple factor and dc voltage (Using graphical analysis
and theoretical approach).

Figure 1

2. Refer to the voltage waveform of figure 2 observed across the load in the case of power
supply. Determine the ripple factor and percentage ripple content.

3. A power supply uses a FWR and a capacitor filter. The filter feeds a load resistance of 1000
Ω. If the dc voltage across the load is 12V and the peak to peak value of ripple were not to
exceed 0.2V, determine the minimum capacitance value of the filter capacitor. Assume power
line frequency of 50 Hz.

4. A FWR using a capacitor filter has to supply 30V dc to a 1KΩ load. Assuming the diode and
the transformer winding resistance to be negligible, estimate the output voltage required and
the filter capacitor for a ripple factor of 0.01. Also estimate the input voltage required.

5. In a Full wave rectifier with a capacitor filter, find output ripple factor, IDC and load resistance
if C=600µF, T = 20ms, Vr(p-p)=1.2V and VDC =9V.
