HISTORY OF MILO

1934

 Milo or known that time as fortified tonic food was developed during the 1930s as a means of
supplementing children's diets with the nutrients they weren't getting due to the harsh conditions
of the Great Depression
 In 1934 Nestlé Australia food scientist Thomas Mayne developed a powdered chocolate malt
drink that people could mix with water or milk, and drink hot or cold. He launched Milo at the
Sydney Royal Easter Show that year, and drank a cup every day until he died aged 93.
 Milo began production at the plant located in Smithtown, near Kempsey on the North Coast
of New South Wales. The name was derived from the famous ancient athlete Milo of Croton, after
his legendary strength.

1950

 Milo was introduced in Malaysia by Nestle in 1950, as a tonic food drink. Their primary target
customers is for the athletes to get energy to keep going. Malaysia is now the biggest market of
MILO.

1960s

 In the 1960s, the 'Milo tin' term gained further popularity as a means of criticism towards the light
and flimsy construction of early Japanese cars. The Malaysian market had historically been a
stronghold for Western car companies, and Japanese cars were initially perceived as inferior and
cheaply made.[

1964

 It was in this year that MILO® was introduced to the Philippines as a tonic food drink with that
unique choco malt taste. Since then, it has been a vital part of the Filipino household nutirition.

Early 1970

 In Peru, during the 1970s military dictatorship, Milo labels displayed Peruvian motifs, such as
photos and pictures of Peruvian towns, history, crops, fruits, animals, plants, as an educational
aid. After 1980, when the military left power, sports predominated on the labels.

1974

 After a successful partnership with sports in previous years, the brand launched its very first
sports event -- The MILO Marathon. From a single race with 747 runners, it is now a year-round,
nationwide, multi-race event with over 200,000 participants!

1983

 To help school children maximize summer vacation and further the importance of sports among
kids, MILO created its Summer Sports Clinic. Starting with only 5 sports clinics, it now has 13 that
teaches your children both champion sports skills and values.
1988

 Winning energy manifests itself best in competition. So, a grand nationwide tournament for young
champions was created. Since it began, the country has seen great skill and even greater heart
from elementary and high school students year on year.

1992

 It was MILO that first used the nation’s battle cry “Malaysia Boleh!” and kindled the national spirit
of achieving the impossible.

1995

 The Inventor of MILO Thomas Mayne died on January 25, 1995 at aged 93. Thomas Mayne
practised what he preached — he enjoyed a hot MILO every night before bed before he died.

2008

 A new version of Milo called Milo B-Smart was released in 2008 (the original and malt Milo
varieties remain); which is of a finer texture and has added B vitamins and iodine. It has a
different taste from the original Milo formula and is marketed as a health food for children.

2012

 MILO R2 was developed. It's a 3-in-1 powdered chocolate drink, specially formulated to re-fuel
and re-energize grown-ups for work and for sports.

2013

 MILO launches Breakfast Day to promote a healthy lifestyle for all Malaysians.
 In May 2013, and after more than 20 years out of the Portuguese market, Nestlé reintroduced the
brand aiming at the high-end market.

2014

 MILO ACTIV-GO is launched in Malaysia. Drinking MILO with ACTIV-GO as part of a healthy
breakfast provides all the essential nutrients that helps prepare your children to get the best out of
their day.

2016

 In 2016, Nestle Philippines stated that it will begin to produce Milo using its "protomalt"
formulation sometime in 2017. The protomalt is composed of carbohydrates derived from barley
and cassava.

2017

 In 2017 the Colombian manufactured Milo has started appearing on shelves in supermarkets
in the United States such as Walmart (Alongside Hispanic sections), and King Soopers
(Denver CO).
