Counting to 10 for Preschoolers

This document provides a lesson plan for teaching pre-schoolers numbers from 1 to 10. It uses YouTube Kids videos and worksheets on iPads to reinforce counting skills. Students work in pairs to find objects matching assigned numbers, then present to the class. The plan could be improved by giving students more independent assignments, like illustrating their age through drawing, to share on a class blog.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

YouTube Kids was built for a fun, family-friendly place for children and families. Youtube connects children to
an new world where they can learn a second or third language from a native speaker if they live in a
monolingual household. All students benefit from closed captions espically those who are deaf of hearing
impaired. There are many small channels that have hundreds of videos available for auditory learners as well.
Flipped classroom helps students of all abilities to excel. Flipped learning allows for self-paced learning,
students can prepare for class whenever they want and they can take any length of time to finish.

Lesson idea implementation:

Teacher will introduce to the students about numbers by grabbing all the childrens attention by asking “How
old are you?” The teacher will allow the students to raise their hand and show how old they are by raising
their fingers and saying the number out loud. Then teacher will proceed with her lesson plan by turning on a
youtube video on “Youtube Kids” on the projector for all the children to view and have a sing along as the
number song is playing for them. Afterwards the teacher will write down the numbers from 1 through 10 on

the interactive white board in different colors. Then teacher will allow students to get up and be active by
giving them a assignmnent which is giving the students an opportunity to get in pairs and give each pair a
number and they will go around the room and find certain objects that matches their number (e.g. if the
teacher gave the number 3, the pair of students will find 3 pencils or any other object. By doing this the
students are practicing counting while touching the objects and being active.
Finally when each pair has gotten their objects they will come together during circle time and each pair
will share their objects and their number to the rest of their classmates. After the students are done with that
assisgnment, the teacher will give each students an ipad where they will trace 1-10 worksheet on their ipads
while the number song is playing in the background during this assignment for the kids to have an
opportunity to sing along and learn the numbers. As their closing lesson, the students will come sit down at
the rug with the teacher and sing the numbers from 1-10 together as a class.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson plan could have some improvements by having a flipped classroom where the children are given
the opportunity to make an drawing assisgnment where they write their age on a construction paper and
decorate it with their favorite things, then the teacher could have their art work on the teacher/parent blog
for the parents to view and the other teachers to view as well. Teacher also could have given the students
more independent work rather than being in pairs.
