PREFACE
Being a student of mechanical engineering in UET, Lahore, it is an integral and
inevitable art of my studies to get internship in the multinational organization to get
oriented with the corporate culture to learn the ethics and conventions applied there.
This provides the student an immense opportunity to evaluate themselves in the
practically exercised philosophies where the student come by a chance to explore
their qualities and pin point the loop holes which can give rise to some problems in
their future and to rectify these weak areas before they may assume alarming
proportions.
I have completed my internship in the Descon Engineering Limited World Head
Quarters, Lahore. Here I got an opportunity to observe the difference between the
theoretical and practical worlds from a very close quarter as to there lies a gulf
between the theoretical and practical approaches. Whatever can be learned from can
be rarely been had from the theory only.

knowledge, wisdom within and beyond my comprehension. He is the only God, who
can help us in every field of life. All respect and possible tributes goes to my Holy
Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), who is forever guidance and knowledge for all human
beings on this Earth.
I am greatly indebted to my learned Supervisor Sir who had great influence on me
during my formative years. This report reflects the knowledge which I have gained
from my valuable teachers. I acknowledge with deep gratitude the invaluable help
extended to me by my Supervisor. Without his corporation it was not possible for
me to complete my informative internship. He guided and helped me and specially
the sympathetic attitude, which always inspired me for hard work.
I am very thankful to the head of Construction Department Mr. Javaid, and all
engineers and employees of that department for their corporative attitude during my
internship.

DESCON
Descon’s global presence spreads across United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman
and Qatar from where new ventures are executed in Kuwait, Iraq and Egypt. The
development and manufacturing of industrial process equipment and piping spool
takes effect from our state-of-the-art plant. The strength of our experienced project
team carrying operations have the essential ISO, OHSAS and ASME certifications
in addition to our own QA & QC and HSE standards.
Today, Descon owns and operates chemical and power plants, with allied interests
in inspection and testing. Descon Chemicals Business comprises of Descon
Oxychem Limited. Our Power Business takes shape in the form of Descon Power
Solutions (DPS), providing power plant operations and maintenance (O&M)
services for thermal and renewable power plants in Pakistan. Descon also owns two
Independent Power Plants (IPPs), Altern Energy Limited, 32 MW gas-based power
plant and Rousch (Pakistan) Power Limited, a 450 MW combined cycle power plant.
As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, Descon takes immense pride in
educating underprivileged youth, keen to acquire technical skills and improving their
livelihood through the Descon Technical Institute. DTI also provides vocational
trainings to young aspiring students.
Driven by a set vision and commitment, Descon strives to add value to our clients'
businesses by providing world-class solutions at cost-effective levels.
History
The journey began forty-one years ago, in a five hundred square feet office space at
Lahore’s historical WAPDA house. We had a vision to embark on a journey to create
Pakistan’s leading engineering enterprise. Over the years, the spirit of our founders
inspired our people to not just achieve the ordinary but the extraordinary. This belief
became the foundation of Pakistan’s leading multinational conglomerate; Descon.
It all started in a small one room office in Lahore. The pioneers of the company came
from a fertilizer plant. It was the entrepreneurial spirit of four people who had a
vision of building a lasting institution prominent for its professionalism and
distinguished by the desire of creating a world-class engineering powerhouse. Today
that vision has come true and the journey has been replete with significant strides
forward in its history.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of the report is to highlight the important outcomes of my internship that
what I have gained and how I apply my 3 years theoretical study practically during
my stay of 4 weeks in DESCON ENGINEERING LIMITED. The company main
purpose and there 5 divisions are described, and a layout of construction department
was built and highlight the importance of PMC (Project Monitoring and Control) in
the construction department where I mainly work as an internee for 1 month. A little
explanation about my work done on excel and on the SAP Software. Due to the
policies of DESCON, all the work done by DESCON engineers are confidential, so
I have described generally about the SAP not of the work I done on SAP in
DESCON.
ORGANOGRAM OF DESCON
An organizational chart (often called organization chart, org chart, organigram(me),
or organogram) is a diagram that shows the structure of an organization and the
relationships and relative ranks of its parts and positions/jobs. The Organogram of
Descon is as below.

DIVISIONS OF DESCON
On the first, the general intro of DESCON was given and their vital work in the
development of work was given and visited the main 5 divisions of DESCON, which
are:
1. EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction)
2. Construction
3. Manufacturing
4. Infrastructure
5. Maintenance

My internship was mainly in the Project Monitoring and Control which is the sub-
division of the Construction department. The purpose of the construction department
is to basically build the power plant, grid station and oil refinery etc. The sub-
divisions of the Construction department are:
1. BD department

These are basically the departments in the Construction Division and in all divisions
these departments are working.

WORKING IN CONSTRUCTION DIVISION


The first BD department carry the project from the client and make deal and after
then the client either provides the designs to the proposals and either the proposal
make the diagrams of the project they have to construct and they make the cost
estimations with the help of the Win bit Software. The proposal department has the
section of piping, equipment, painting and insulation etc. they calculate the cost
estimation and then the planning department look at the check and balance of the
actual cost and the estimated cost and they look at the every cost the client provide
for the project. The machinery used for the plant to construct is provided by the E&P
department and they also calculate the cost. The finance department also keep an eye
on the budget release by the client and supervised whether the workers on the site
are gaining their salary on time. Commercial department provide the raw material
and Sub-Contract do the contracts with outsiders for the work that company can’t.
HR department take an eye on all the work and hiring in divisions. HSE department
is responsible for the health safety of the site workers and make the environment
friendly for the worker to accomplish their work. Admin work is to arrange people
to do the work. All electrical work is under the E&I department.
EXCEL WORK
1. On the excel, I make the Gantt Chart that highlight the area between the
start date and end date with the help of the conditional formatting and use
of AND operation. The example as shown.

The generic formula used is:


=AND(Date>=Start, Date<=End)
2. I also complete the salary excel sheet of the employs which shows the
salary of different workers who work on the project during the project
duration.
3. I also use the IF+AND formula on the excel.

SAP WORK
SAP stands for Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing. SAP, by
definition, is also name of the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software as well
the name of the company. SAP Software was Founded in 1972 by Wellenreuther,
Hopp, Hector, Plattner, and Tschira. A German software company whose products
allow businesses to track customer and business interactions. SAP is especially well-
known for its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and data management
programs. SAP is an acronym for Systems, Applications and Products.
On the SAP, I mainly work on cjn20 (project builder). The supervisor teaches me
how to open any project report on the SAP and there is a specific code for the
confidential the fiscal year is a one year and it starts from July and end in June of
coming year. The controlling area is XXS1 and the PROFIT CENTER is
000000XX/E the 000000XX shows the profit center and L means Labor and E
means Equipment. A sample diagram of the SAP work from net shown below.

CONCLUSION
This report is all about the DESCON ENGINEERING LIMITED divisions and its
departments. The Basic Work the engineer does on the site and in the HEAD
QUARTERS on the SAP and P6 software. This report also shows my work as an
internee on SAP and Excel during my stay in the PMC department in 4 weeks.
