EXPERIMENT NO. 8 TITLE: FREE TRANSEVERSE VIBRATION OF BEAM USING VIBRATION
ANALYZER

AIM :- To determine natural frequency of transverse vibration of beam using

vibration analysis software package(RTPRO).
APPARATUS
USED: - B & K make FFT analyzer, Tri- axial Accelerometer, Wax

EXPERIMENTAL
SETUP: - The arrangement is shown in fig. It consists of M.S rectangular beam
supported at one end by a trunnion pivoted in the bearing. The bearing
housing is fixed to the side member of the frame. The other end of the
beam is supported by the lower end of helical spring. Upper end of
spring is attached to the adjustable screw.

The contact type piezoelectric tri-axial accelerometer is fixed on the

vibrating body with the help of wax to sense the vibration. The
accelerometer senses the response in all three directions so the number
of channels. All three channels are attached to data acquisition device
are interfaced with computer.

THEORY: - The field of vibration monitoring is very important, with applications

from building structures to cars and machinery. One monitors
vibrations to analyze the types of loads acting on structures and
components, to verify mathematical models, to evaluate performance of
machines in the presence of various effects, and to detect cracked or
damaged components. The measurement of motion is accomplished by
sensors. Sensors can be designed to measure displacements, velocities,
accelerations, angles, angular velocities, strain levels, temperatures, or
other quantities.
In this experiment, we will be using accelerometers which generate
voltage signals proportional to acceleration. The voltage is then
converted to physical measurements.
we will be obtaining frequency We will be observing at the frequency
spectrum of the measured variables, as well as the actual response
data.

PROCEDURE : -
1. Connect Tri-axial accelerometer to 3 channels.
2. Select Signal analysis and waveform source.
3. Close 1st window and Minimize second window.
4. Go to setup and select ‘signal setup’ – for 3 channels select time
capture and FFT
5. Next go to measurement parameters ‘sampling’
6. Here you can select Frequency span as per structure for ex 400
Hz and resolution as lines 400 click OK.
7. Next go to setup > measurement setup > average
8. Select number of averages (for ex. 3), average type ‘linear’
9. Next go to setup > channel parameters. Select physical quantity
and enter sensitivity for transducer, define ID and Location for
sensor.
10. Now go to Setup > Measurement Setup > Trigger> no trigger
11. Now open ‘New Window’ by clicking on new window icon.
12. Right click on the middle of the graph and go to contents

13. Select input 1(t) / content and press forward arrow tab once and
click OK. (This is to see the time signal of the 1st channel)
14. Now select Y axis format as ‘Mag / real / imaginary / dB mag’
and Dimension as Acceleration, velocity or displacement as per
requirement and click OK.
15. Similarly open one new window if you wish to see time signal of
the second channel.
16. Right click > Go to contents
17. And select input 2(t) from signal candidates and move this to
‘selected signals’ window by pressing forward arrow tab
18. Similarly open three more blank (new) windows for acceleration,
velocity and displacement.
19. Natural frequency measurement is to be done on set up 1 for
which above mentioned procedure is followed.

OBSERVATIONS: Attach necessary measurement graphs.

CONCLUSION: Based on the graphs obtained from Analyzer comment on response

values and corresponding frequencies.
