Sustainable Catchment Forest Management launched in Tripura
On 16th January 2019, Tripura Chief Minister,Biplab Kumar Deb launched the Project for Sustainable
Catchment Forest Management(SCATFORM) at State Forest Academy Ground in Hatipara in West Tripura.
Key Points
i. The project is jointly funded by the Government of India and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
which is providing Rs. 1000 crores for a span of 10 years to improve forestlands in targeted catchment areas of
Tripura.
ii. The 80 per cent of the cost is contributed by JICA and the rest would be funded by the state and central
governments.
iii. A total of 1,447 check dams will be set up in hilly areas in seven districts of Tripura.

Neermahal:Logo for Tripura tea unveiled


On January 20, 2019,Tripura’s chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb launched the logo for Tripura’s tea
in Agartala,which features Neermahal which would enhances its popularity all over the world.
i. ‘NeerMahal’ is the Tripura’s logo which is a iconic place in Tripura and it is one of the largest water
palace in India among the two water palace.The other water palace of India is located at Jal Mahal in
Rajasthan.
ii. Tripura is the second largest tea producer with 10 million kg tea produced annually.
iii. The logo was designed by artist and designer Aparesh Paul.

ICAR and Tripura received the award for the best Tableau in Republic Day Parade from Defence
Minister
On January 28, 2019,Defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman presented the First Prize to the Indian Council of
Agricultural Research (ICAR) for its representation of Tableau on ‘Kisan Gandhi’ with the theme
:“Mishrit Kheti, Khushiyon Ki Kheti” under the central ministries and departments category.
Key Points:
i. The ICAR presentation depicted the importance of dairy farming, use of indigenous breeds and livestock
based organic agriculture for rural prosperity.
ii. Tripura bagged the best state tableau with the theme:‘Empowering Rural Economy the Gandhian
Way’whereas The second position was bagged by Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab was placed in the third
spot.

Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura celebrating statehood day


On January 21, 2019,Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura are celebrating their statehood day.It is their 47th
statehood day.
Keys points to be noted
i. In the year 1972, all the three states became full-fledged states under the North Eastern Region
(Reorganisation) Act, 1971.
ii. The erstwhile princely states of Tripura and Manipur were merged with Indian Union in October 1949 and
became full-fledged states in 1972
iii. Meghalaya was a part of Assam before it was carved out as a full-fledged state under the North Eastern
Region (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971.In Meghalaya, a week-long programme on the theme, ‘Celebrating
Meghalaya-India’, on the occasion of the 47th Statehood Day and the 70th Republic Day began on Monday in
different districts.

Union Minister of State Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti inaugurated first Mega Food Park of Tripura
Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries,Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti,inaugurated Tripura’s
first mega food park named Sikaria Mega Food Park Pvt Ltd at Village Tulakona in Agartala.
i. It has been set up on 50 acres of land at the cost of Rs 87.45 crore and the Government of India has
approved a financial assistance of Rs 50 Crore to the project.

CIPET centre inaugurated by Sadananda Gowda inaugurates in Tripura


Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, D V Sadananda Gowda, inaugurated a centre of
the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET) at Bodhjungnagar in Tripura.
i. The institute will produce 1500 skilled workers per annum.
About CIPET
• CIPET was established in 1968 by Government of India with the assistance of United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) at Chennai.
• It is a premier national institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt. of
India fully devoted to Skill Development, Technology Support Services, Academic and Research
(STAR).
• The main objective of setting up of the institute was to develop manpower in different disciplines
of Plastics Engineering & Technology as no similar institute was in existence in the country.

Overview of Prime Minister’s visit to Tripura


On 9th February 2019, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi visited Agartala in the final leg of his a day long tour to
Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.
Various development projects were inaugurated by Narendra Modi in Agartala
PM Modi during his visit to Agartala, Tripura inaugurated various development projects. It was the final
destination of a day long tour to 3 North Eastern States.
Key Points
i. Narendra Modi advocated the HIRA (Highway, I way, Railway, Airway) Model of Development for Tripura.
ii. Farmers and labourers in unorganized sector after 60 years of age will get Rs.3000 per month as pension
through Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan Pension Yojana.
iii. Farmers who have less than 5 acres of land will get Rs.6000 per annum in their bank account
through PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
iv. A New Complex of Tripura Institute of Technology, Narsingarh was inaugurated by Narendra Modi.
Garjee- Belonia Railway Line was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi
Modi during his visit to Agartala inaugurated 23 Km long Garjee-Belonia Railway Line. The project was part
of the Rs.3407 crore Agartala – Sabroon national railway project which is for 115 km.
Key Points
i. The 23.32 km railway track is in Southern Tripura under Garjee-Belonia section. It would facilitate the
carriage of goods and passengers from North-eastern states on the Bangladesh railway network.
ii. The project costs Rs. 400 crores. The train will run at maximum speed of 100km/hr. It is the full – fledged
rail connectivity with the rest of India.
Statue of Tripura’s last Maharaja was unveiled by PM
During the visit of PM Modi to Agartala he unveiled the statue of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya at
the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, Agartala. It was part of the union government policy to honour the heroes
of India.

Key Points
i. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya is considered as father of modern architecture in Tripura. He did
the entire planning of present-day Tripura during his rule. He planned the capital city Agartala also.
ii. Statue was built by faculty and students of Tripura government’s Art and craft college. It costs Rs.5
lakh for the Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya statue.

Republic Day Parade: Gorkha Brigade wins best marching contingent award
On January 30, 2019, Gorkha Brigade received the best marching contingent trophy of the Republic Day
parade whereas ,The CRPF won the best marching contingent prize for the para-military forces.
i. In the category of tableaux ,Tripura ‘s tableau depicted Gandhian way of fuelling rural economy and won
the first prize whereas Jammu and Kashmir’s tableau depicted the state’s composite culture and ethnic
diversity won the second place and Punjab’s tableau which represented the theme of Jallianwala Bagh
massacre of 1919, which evoked memories of Independence struggle received the third prize.

“Notun Disha”initiated by Tripura govt to assess academic level of school students
The government of Tripura announced ‘Notun Disha’ (New Direction) for assessing the academic level of
students in classes III-VIII and then improving their current level. It was launched by state Education
Minister Ratan Lal Nath.
i. This initiative aims to make students proficient in all the subjects and for this purpose an educational
assessment was conducted from 25-28th February 2019 to ascertain the current level of students.
About Notun Disha
• Training will be provided by NGOs, educational institutions to 800 teachers.
• The duration of the project is 1 month.
• Rs. 28 crores have been allocated to the project.

Tribal musician of Tripura, Thanga Darlong, conferred with first AB Vajpayee Life Time Achievement
Award
Thanga Darlong, a musician from Tripura was awarded with the first Atal Behari Vajpayee Life Time
Award at the 37th Agartala Book Fair in Agartala, Tripura. He was honoured by the Deputy Chief Minister
of Tripura,Jishnu Devvarma.
i. He is the last tribal musician who plays Rosem which is a flute-like musical instrument made of bamboo.
ii. He had earlier received the following awards:
• Padma Shri- January 2019
• Sangeet Natak Akademi Award- 2014
iii. He was also a part of the ‘Tree of Tongues in Tripura’ which was directed by the National Awards winner
Joshy Joseph in 2016.

Special Central Police Observers for States of Mizoram, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Tripura have been
appointed by Election Commission of India
On 26th March 2019, Election Commission of India has appointed Sh K K Sharma as Special Central Police
Observer for the States of West Bengal and Jharkhand and Sh Mrinal Kanti Das as Special Central Police
Observer for States of Tripura and Mizoram.
Key Points:
i. Sh K K Sharma, an Indian Police Service officer of 1982 batch and is a Retd DG Border Security Force.
ii. Sh Mrinal Kanti Das, an Indian Police Service officer of 1977 batch and is a Retd DGP Manipur.

iii. Both these officers were allocated to supervise the deployment and other security issues in their respective
states.

In child marriage incidents, Tripura ranks second highest in India


Tripura has been ranked at second place in India,in terms of child marriages among girls between the age
of 15 and 19 years, according to a report released by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), Young
Lives – an international study on childhood poverty.The survey has been coordinated by the team of University
of Oxford.
Key Points:
i. Tripura occupies 21.6 percent which is significantly higher than the national average of 11.9 percent of
child marriage incidents.
ii. Its four districts namely Dhalai, South Tripura, North Tripura, and West Tripura have the highest
number of child marriage.

3-day “Mainamati Maitree Exercise 2019” between BSF and BGB held in Tripura
Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) took part in the 3-day ‘Mainamati
Maitree Exercise 2019’ as a part of ‘Confidence Building Measures’ between India and Bangladesh held in
a general area of BSF’s Srimantapur border outpost near Agartala, Tripura.
i. The main objective of this exercise was to plan and conduct anti-smuggling and anti-criminal activity related
operations with an aim to achieve better joint operational efficiency and border management in the area.
ii. Both the forces took part in joint patrolling, anti-smuggling drills, simulated raids on suspected places in
both the countries, and checking of goods and identity at international check posts.
iii. The exercise was named after Mainamati hill range situated 8 km west of Comilla
township in Bangladesh, which is home to ancient Buddhist archaeological site in the region.

Senior Tripura BJP leader Dilip Sarkar passed away


Dilip Sarkar, Senior Tripura Bhartiya Janta Party leader and five-time MLA,from Badharghat in Agartala
passed away on 1st April, 2019, at a private hospital in Delhi after prolonged acute liver illness. He was 61.He
hailed from Tripura.
Dilip Sarkar was a former state PWD Minister in the Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS) alliance
government between 1988 and 1993.

Ex-Deputy Poll Commissioner selected as Special Observer for Tripura


On 22nd April 2019, Former deputy election commissioner Vinod Zutshi has been appointed as special
observer for Tripura. The Election Commission (EC) had postponed polling in the Tripura (East) Lok Sabha
seat to the third phase on 23rd April from 18th April, due to law and order situation.
Key Points:
i. He was one of the special observers appointed by the Election Commission (EC) to ascertain when the
assembly elections in Jammu and Kasmir can be held.
ii. Vinod Zutshi, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of 1982 batch, served as the Secretary, Ministry
of Tourism, Govt. of India from 2015 to 2017.

10th National Science Film Festival of India to be held in Agartala, Tripura in 2020
10th National Science Film Festival of India (NSFFI) will be held in Agartala, Tripura in January-February
2020. This is for the second time the event will be held in a North-Eastern city. It will be jointly hosted
by Vigyan Prasar of the Central Government, State Government, and Tripura Central University.
Key Points:
i. The Chief Minister of the State Biplab Kumar Deb had requested the Union Science and Technology
Minister to hold the NSFF in Tripura.
ii. Minimum 10 countries will participate in the upcoming event and it will include the films produced by
UNICEF, UNESCO, and filmmakers from different countries.
iii. In NSFFI, the maximum length of the films will be 40 minutes and Vigyan Prasar will raise awareness on
science and environment to the society through cinemas.
iv. NSFFI was first held in Chennai in 2011. Since then, all the regions of the nation have been covered
including Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, Bangalore, Lucknow, Mumbai, Guwahati and Mohali.
v. Besides the NSFFI, The Tripura Government has plans to host ‘Destination Tripura’, a special competitive
film production initiative. It will focus on upholding tourism and rich biodiversity of Tripura like the flora and
fauna, wildlife sanctuaries, water bodies, rubber and bamboo plantations etc.

Tripura gets Rs 358 Cr of a special grant from Centre for road projects
On July 5, 2019, The Union Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India has sanctioned an
additional amount of Rs 358 crore for the speedy completion of half-done construction works and
maintenance of roads in rural areas of Tripura.
Key points:
i. PMGSY: Under the Prime Minister Gramin Sadak Yojana(PMGSY), the grant would help the state
government to complete the projects and infrastructure development works and modern technology
and materials would be used for the maintenance of roads.
ii. The additional amount was demanded by the Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb from the
Centre.
iii. The State Government also has undertaken the project of constructing 42 roads covering 307.23
kilometers with the aid of Rs 299.96 crore from World Bank.

7th Economic Census began from Tripura


7th Economic Census (EC) for the year 2019 which is conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and
Programme Implementation (MoSPI) commenced from Tripura on July 29, 2019. It is held after a
gap of 5 years. This is done to get a complete count of all economic units in India. After Tripura, it will
be launched in Puducherry, and in other states and union territories in August and September, 2019.
Key Points:
i. Background: The previous Economic Censuses were conducted in 1977, 1980, 1990, 1998, 2005
and 2013. As per the Economic Census conducted in 2013, there were 58.5 million establishments
employing around 131 million workers.
ii. Implementing Agencies: Common Services Centers (CSC) e-Governance Services India Limited, a
Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology
(MeITY), are the implementing agencies for the development of Information and Communications
Technology (ICT) platform system and conduction of fieldwork for the 7th Economic Census.

iii. Method: 7th EC will use technological interventions in the fieldwork and develop a nationwide
Business Register for dynamic updation. The data will be collected through door to door survey of
each household and commercial establishments under the provisions of Collection of Statistics Act
2008.
iv. Schedule: The fieldwork is expected to be completed by December and the results at the national
level is expected to be available by March 2020.
v. Sector: EC is the only source of information on the unorganized sector in the country.
About EC:
It is the census of the Indian economy through counting all entrepreneurial units in the country which
are involved in any economic activities of either agricultural or non-agricultural sector engaged in
production and/or distribution of goods and/or services not for the sole purpose of own
consumption.

Ramesh Bais sworn-In as the Governor of Tripura


On July 29, 2019, A seven-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Chhattisgarh’s Raipur and former
Union minister, Ramesh Bais, aged 71, was sworn in as the 18th Governor of Tripura in the presence
of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and senior officials of the administration. He was administered
oath by the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court Justice Sanjay Karol at a function in Old Raj Bhawan,
Agartala. He succeeds Kaptan Singh Solanki.

Tripura Current Affairs - August 2019


Tripura’s Banned Insurgency Group, NLFT signs a tripartite settlement agreement with MHA
and Tripura govt
On August 10,2019, Government of India (GoI) has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Settlement
(MoS)with Government of Tripura and banned rebel outfit of Tripura National Liberation Front of
Twipra (NLFT) led by Sabir Kumar Debbarma & agreed to abjure the path of violence, join the
mainstream and abide by the Constitution of India. It also decided to surrender its 88 cadres with
their weapons.
Key points:
i. MoS: The NLFT representatives called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah after signing the
tripartite MoS, which has been signed by Satyendra Garg, Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary
(North East), Kumar Alok, Additional Chief Secretary (Home, Tripura), and Sabir Kumar Debbarma
and Kajal Debbarma of the NLFT (SD).
ii. Benefit: The surrendered cadres will be given surrender benefits as per the Surrender-cum-
Rehabilitation Scheme, 2018 of the Home Ministry as per the recent agreement. Tripura Government
will help them in housing, recruitment, education among others.
iii. Background: Since the year 1997, NLFT has been banned under the Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act,1967 and has been involved in violence, from its camps across the international
border in Bangladesh. It has been responsible for violent activities, including 317 insurgency-related
incidents( where 28 security forces personnel and 62 civilians lost their lives) during the period from
2005 to 2015. Peace talks with NLFT were initiated in 2015&there it has not been involved in any
violence activity by NLFT since 2016.
