Chapter 3

Methodology

Chapter three has seven parts: (1) Research Design, (2) Locale of
the Study, (3) Subjects and/or Respondent/Participants of the Study, (4)
Sample Size and Sampling Techniques, (5) Research Instrument, (6) Data
Gathering Procedure, (7) Data Analysis Procedure.

Part One, Research Design, collecting and analyzing measures of

the variables specified in the problem research.

Part Two, Locale of the Study, discuss and describe the place where
the study is conducted.

Part Three, Subject and/or Respondent/Participant of the study, is a

person who participates in human subject research by being the target of
observation by researchers.

Part Four, Sampling Techniques, specific process by which the

entities of the sample have been selected.

Part Five, Research Instrument, are measurement tools designed to

obtain data on a topic of interest from research subjects.

Part Six, Data Gathering Procedure, is the process of gathering and

measuring information on variables.

Part Seven, Data Analysis Procedure, an essential component of

ensuring data integrity is the accurate and appropriate analysis of the
research finding.
Research Design

This study is quantitative in nature since the research questions we

seek to answer lead to numerical data.
“Specifically, the study is experimental as it aims to determine if
there is a significant difference in academic performance of the students
with or without the use of Quexbook mobile app.

McLeod (2012) defines experimental research as an investigation in

which a hypothesis is scientifically tested and stated that in an
experiment, an independent variable is manipulated and dependent
variable is measured; any extraneous variables are controlled.

True-Experimental Design which is the Posttest-Only Control Group

and Multiple Time Series will be use as the research design of the study
that will be applied to quantitative method throughout the study. True-
Experimental Design can establish cause and effect relationship and
support a hypothesis using statistical analysis and one of the example
design that the researchers will be using is the Posttest-Only Control Group
Design in which a process in experimental group with treatment exposure
and control group without treatment exposure will be tested at same time
and will includes random assignment to groups.

Multiple Time Series Design is a series of periodic measurements that

is taken from two groups of test units the experimental group and control.
The experimental group is exposed to a treatment and then another series
of periodic measurements is taken from both groups.

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted in Numancia Integrated School,

located in F. Quimpo National Highway, Numancia, 5604 Aklan where the
respondents of the study are student currently enrolled for the school year
2019-2020.

Subjects of the Study

The subjects of the study will be Grade 11 Senior High School

students of Numancia Integrated School of S.Y. 2019-2020 who are
currently taking Earth and Life Science as a subject. There are two
different groups of respondents-the experimental and control group-that
were assemble with the same number of respondents on each group who
have the same mean subject Earth and Life Science.

Sampling Size and Sampling Techniques

“The target population of the study will be the senior high school
students during the first semester of the academic year, 2019-2020 of
Numancia, Integrated, School in Numancia, Aklan. These students belong
to three different strands of senior high school program, namely Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical Vocational
Livelihood (TVL), and General Academic Strand (GAS).”

“With a population of size 150, the researchers will consider a sample

of 60 subjects determined using Slovin’s formula for computing sample size
with a ten percent margin of error. These samples shall be selected based
on characteristics of a population and the objective of the study through
purposive sampling with the senior high school strands being used to
define groups and SPSS to purposively determine the samples.”

The Intervention

The study investigation on the effectiveness of using Quexbook

mobile app in academic performance in Earth and Life Science of Grade
11 Senior High School students of Numancia Integrated School. There are
two groups the experimental and control group. The researchers will be
preparing a text reviewer about Earth and Life Science for the control
group to study while in experimental group the Quexbook mobile app will
be used for their studying Earth and Life Science lessons. In this case, the
researchers subjected the experimental group to use the Quexbook
mobile application for their studying in Earth and Life Science subject,
while the control group use the traditional reviewing paper for their
studying in Earth and Life Science subject. First, the researchers will be
combining the two groups to study together and it will take 30 minutes to
finish the studying. They can also bring the reviewer to study at home.

Research Instrument

“This study shall make use of two research instruments to provide

data on the variables being studied. A validated test questionnaire will be
used to determine the students’ academic performance in Earth and Life
Science. To improve the students studying habits, the researchers intend
to use Quexbook mobile app because all the science lesson was
introduced through this app and it helps the learner become advance
towards the subject and also provides feedback on the previous science
lessons that the learner needs to study.

Data Gathering Procedure

A letter to conduct the experiment will be sent to the advisers of the

students to ask a permission in conducting the experiment that exposed
the subjects to use Quexbook mobile app in studying.

The experiment will be conducted at the most appropriate time

wherein there were no disturbance in classes or interruptions to the
schedules of the subjects and as the needed data were gathered.
The researchers will be dividing the class into two groups and for
each classroom- the experimental group will be given a special treatment
to the subjects, while the control group was the traditional treatment to
the subjects. The researchers will be made sure that both groups are
equal by the number of subjects and subject area from 1st semester of S.Y.
2019-2020.

The study environment will be then controlled as both groups were

given 20 minutes for reviewing using the Quexbook mobile app and the
traditional reviewing paper prepared by the researchers. After studying
their lessons, the students from experimental and control group will then
answered the questions prepared by the researchers for the science
subject area.

Grade 11 students will answer test questions in Earth and Life

Science subject, some students will be taught about the concepts
contained in the instruments, as which they will review for only 20-30
minutes.

All requirements and behaviors of the subjects were observed while

the research was being conducted.

Data Analysis Procedure

Quantitative analysis involves the techniques by which researchers

will convert the data to numerical forms and subject them to statistical
analysis. Procedures in analyzing the gathered data presented in tabular
form and providing the subjects profile according to sex and strand/track.
Data of the subject’s test scores were then categorized based on the sex
and strand/track. This determine the frequencies or percentage of
student’s profile and test results with regards to the sample size. To
determine whether the use of Quexbook mobile app would show a
significant difference to the test scores of the students from the two
groups, gathered data will also have presented according in the table.
