CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter will summarize the methods and procedures that the researchers

use to determine Theory-Practice Gap: Challenges of 2nd year Nursing Students on

Transition from Theory to Practice school year 2023-2024.

Research Design

This study will use a descriptive-correlational method as the research design to

assess the data gather from the respondents. The descriptive part of the study is the

part where the respondents include their demographic profile, challenges of theory-

practice gap in terms of different procedures, RLE protocol and interpersonal skills and

effects of theory-practice gap in terms of their physical, emotional, and psychological

effects. The researchers will also use correlational research methodology to see if there

is a relationship between the challenges and effects of THEORY-PRACTICE GAP in 2nd

Year Nursing students on transition from theory to practice.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents in this study are 2nd-year nursing students at Naga College

Foundation, Inc. The researchers distributed a survey questionnaire to the 177

respondents. They are chosen through random sampling. These respondents are suited

for this study because they are the target subject.

Data Gathering Procedure

This study aims to articulate the effectiveness of theory in nursing, highlighting the

possible challenges and barriers experienced by students in the transition from theory to

practice. In terms of gathering the data, researchers will select a participant, which is

the second-year nursing students that are currently enrolled in Naga College Foundation,

Inc. Researchers will provide a letter of consent to the respondents and select a specific

date for when they will conduct the survey. The questionnaire that will be provided by

the researchers is an open-ended questionnaire so that our participants can clearly

elaborate on their reasons and experiences. The survey will be held face-to-face

accordingly. To conclude this study, the researchers will analyze the data collected from

our respective respondents.

Data Gathering Tools

The researchers will conduct a series of questionnaires approved by the subject's clinical

instructor, which will then be disseminated to regular second-year students at Naga

College Foundation during the school year 2023-2024. The researchers will explain the

importance of the survey and answer any questions that the respondents may have so

that they can answer the set of questions fully aware of their role as a subject of the

study. The researchers will use an open-ended question Questionnaire- This is the main

instrument in gathering data. Its content is a set of questions about their demographic

profile,
Statistical Tools

The data that will be collected will be organized, tabulated, and analyzed in the light

of the purposes of the study. To interpret the data, statistical tools will be used.

Percentage Frequency. This will be used to determine the demographic

profile of the respondents. Frequency, distribution, and percentage table will be used, as

in:

P= f/n x 100

Where:

P= Percentage

f= Frequency

n= Total number of respondents

Weighted Mean. This will be used to determine the challenges of 2 nd year

nursing student on transition from theory to practice in term of different procedure, RLE

protocol, and interpersonal skills.

wm= fx/N

Where:

f= frequency

x= Midpoint

N= Total number of samples

Chi-square Test. This will be used to determine the significant association

between the challenges and effects of Theory-Practice Gap-Challenges of 2 nd year

Nursing Students and Transition from theory to practice.

χ2 = ∑(Oi – Ei)2/Ei

Where:

X2 = Chi squared

Oi = observed value

Ei = expected value

PROCEDURE OF INVESTIGATIONS

The study followed the different steps in the research process in order to provide

a more reliable and valid result.

Conceptualization of the Research Problem. The research problem will be conceptualized

by looking at the gap from theory to practice and how it affects the students during

transition from learnings through the use of theories to practice in a hospital setting.

Approval of the Research Title. After the completion of the title proposal, the approval of

the research proposal will be secured by the panelist from the committee of the school

board.

Requisition of Permit to Conduct the Study. The permission to conduct the research will

be approved and supported by the Dean of the CHS Department and permission coming

from the target respondents.

Preparation and Validation of the Data Gathering Tools. Questionnaires will be prepared

to gather and collect the needed data.

Administration and Retrieval of the Questionnaire. The questionnaires will be given to a

random second year regular nursing students and will be personally retrieved by the

researchers.

Administration and Retrieval of the Test. After the collection of the questionnaires, it will

be assessed through the use the chosen formula and the researchers will take full

responsibility in the retrieval of the surveys.

Statistical Analysis of the Data. Statistical tool will be applied for each specific problem

and results will be placed in a tabular form along with a clear interpretation and

discussion.

Report Writing and Submission of the Thesis to the Committee for Approval. After

analysis, data interpretation, and total revision the research report will ne prepared and

presented to the panel of examiners for approval.
